I have a pair of Nigerian greens that i bought when they were young so far they have spawned twice and have ate the eggs they spawned again this week and it has been three days so far and the female is not staying in the cave it goes in and out now before it was constantly in there.Does this mean that the eggs have hatched or they probably ate them again.
Thanks

Kribs, is she staying nearby or is she wandering the tank? If she is staying within site, or if the male is hanging close while she wanders off, things may still be going well. In 3 to 4 days, the eggs should be hatching. 5 to 7 days after that, she should escort a little herd or fry out of the cave. It usually takes them a few tries before they get it right. I've got some different pelvicachromis that haven't got it right yet. I've got a pair of kribs (P. pulcher) in a 125g community setup. She brings them out, they feed for a couple days, then they are gone. I think the dwarf pike are picking them off. But, I have obsevered them male snacking on them too. There are always 2 options: 1. Let them keep trying and hopefully one day they will succeed. 2. When she spawns again, pull the eggs and hatch them yourself. You don't get to see all the behaviors with option 2, but normally you will get some fry to guarantee the continuation of the species in your tanks. Good luck with them, the West African Dwarfs are rapidly climbing the list as my favorites.

I have a pair of P.taeniatus "moliwe" in a 10gal. and they are currently working on raising their 7 fry. I think there preparing to spawn again if they havent already. when they first spawned, the female wasnt really going in the nest much and i thought it was a failure. She even seemed to be preparing a new site on the other side of the tank in a coconut . I even cheked on the eggs a few times and their numbers were decreasing rapidly. To my suprise, the female had been moving the eggs to the coconut. The male also helped later on by kidnapping the larval fry and putting them in a little pit that he dug by the front of the tank while the female shuttled them back to the coconut. So your current spawn may still be alive like mine is. If your water isnt quite right it could be causing your spawns to fail. One gauranteed way to make them happy is put about 90% distilled water in the tank. Mine spawned in a few days after getting home thanks to distilled water. good luck.
