Gobiocichla ethelwynnae! :D They look crazy, like someone dyed a wonderi yellow, stretched it out, and then went over it with a rolling pin. The male is 4 inches long, but about a third of an inch wide and a sixth of an inch tall! the female is , of course, shorter and stockier. The pattern on their back makes them blend in with the pebbles when seen from above, but viewed from the side, they are yellow with a black lateral stripe and red edging on the fins. They are now in a forty with Danio devario and a pair of Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi. They are feeding well on frozen bloodworms and live glassworm. They are wild caught, and were only sixty five dollars for the pair. Now I have two of my "holy grail fish" (Lamprologus congoensis and Gobiocichla spp.), all thats left is Teleogramma depressum! 8)

Success!

Hey Sam,

Good going! Please keep us posted. As an added benefit to your acquisition, do you know where the nomen "ethelwynnae" comes from?

Ethelwynne Trewavas was a world class ichthyologist who specialized in endemic African fishes. Much of what is known and understood in African ichthyologic science and in the hobby is due to her pioneering efforts. Fortunately for us, another grande dame carries the torch.

Dr. "Melanie Stiassny is the Axelrod Research Curator in the Department of Ichthyology at the American Museum of Natural History and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University where she has active graduate and undergraduate teaching programs. Before coming to New York she was an Assistant Professor of Biology at Harvard University and taught there for five years. Her PhD is from the University of London and she spent three years of postdoctoral research in the Netherlands before joining the faculty at Harvard University."

Behind her back, I refer to her as the "African Queen." As with Dr. Trewavas, Dr. Stiassny's contributions to science, conservation and the hobby are immeasurable. With over 30 published papers to her credit, of late, Dr. Stiassny, in conjunction with Dr. Ulrich Schliewen, have erected a new West African genus and species, Etia nuguti. For further information concerning this enigma of a dwarf cichlid, please refer to the October 2003 issue of "Cichlid News," currently in press.

Good luck!

Dr. Melanie Stiassny

Cool, and doesn't Ms. Stiassny have a Chromidotilapiine named for her?

Yes, Sam, Dr. Anton Lamboj recently named Chromidotilapia melaniae after Dr. Stiassny. Previously, this Gabon endemic was known in the hobby as C. sp. "Shiloango."

Best of luck with your new fish!
