Gobiocichla ethelwynnae

Hello Mark,

There are two Gobiocichlia species: G. ethelwynnae and G. wonderi. G. ethelwynnae is found in the upper Cross River system in Cameroon and has been imported of late. This is probably your fish.

With G. wonderi, the midlateral stripe runs just below the eye; while with G. ethelwynnae, it runs through it. This should help you to ID your fish.

Good luck!

Thanks Randall,

The stripe runs through the lower half of the eye.
So I guess that would make them G.Wonderi.
Do you know if anybody has spawned them?

Gobiocichla

Hello Mark,

Gobiocichla wonderi is tilapiine cichlid from the Niger system. It is not found in Cameroon. If your fishes' midlateral stripe runs through the eye and not just under it, you may have G. ethelwynnae. Well, whatever you have, Gobiocichla are very cool fish.

I've not bred G. wonderi, but Anton Lamboj's new book states that it's a pair-bonding cave spawner. Broodcare is done by the female, but both parents guard the free-swimming fry. Dr. Lamboj indicates that the female is generally more involved in the process than the male.

As far as I know, G. ethelwynnae has not been bred in aquaria yet.

Good luck!
