Hi all!
My father just have "caught" some kind of crenicichla, I think it's probably a Crenicichla Regani 'cause it's too small, something about 5 - 6 centimeters (something about 2 inches...).
It came with some serpae tetras, some Hemigrammus rodwayi and a carapus fasciatus (this I think i'll give to someone with the hemigrammus rodwayi...).
My father collected those fishes in a public water reservatory near his job so I think it's not the natural habitat of this fish and I think he doesn't live peacefully with serpae tetras... hehe
I'm thinking on make a new tank for those fishes...
But I just don't want to make a new planted tank because my time is quite short...
So I decided in try to make a biotype with rocks and wood.
The questions are:

1 - Those crenicichla fishes when they are small like my new crenicichlas they had to have some kind of bag (I don't know the name in english but in portuguese we call them as "saco vitelino" any chance it could be vitelin bag? hehehe), they just don't have this bag and they look like they'll have no more incredible transformations in their body, someone could guess their maximum size?
I'm guessing those crenicichla would be the dwarf ones...

2 - Any chance I can make then eat industrialized food such tetra min and color bits?

3 - I'm thinking in make a new aquarium for just those crenicichla but I think the table that the aquarium will stay will not suport the weight of a huge aquarium...
I'm thinking in something about 100 - 150 liters, is it OK for this specie?

Thanx for everyone here who could help me!!!
i'm sure for being so incovenient making lots of questions with no photos to identify the crenicichla specie...
Thanx Again!
Bye!

Hi Tjudy!
This log is very interesting!!!
I have the photos but I lost the usb cable of my camera!!! :frown:
The day my father brought me the fish I started to take some photos...
I'll try to find the usb cable, but my jacundá (common name of crenicichla here) is quite equal to yours, but it has about 4 - 6cm not 13cm as yours do.
I'll try to find the damned USB Cable!!!
Thanks!
Bye!!!

Hi there,

You're on the right track, vitelin is a component of egg yolk so a literal translation of 'Saco vitelino' could be 'Egg sack' which as you said is present on very young fish.

I have more phots if you all need them.
Look the size of this crenicichla comparing to those serpae tetras that were caught together in the same water reservatory, the crenicichlas are quite small guys!
See ya!

They are probably too small to identify exaclty at this point. They look like juvinile C. regani, but there are other paikes (large adn small) that look like that when they ae young.

>>' Sometimes I have problems in translate some words... hehe
The problem of not give worth to my english classes when I was young!!!'

please do NOT let your language stop you from posting here. everyone who has ever kept a pike wants you to keep posting. that is very cool, just going to the river and grabbing some baby pikes.

english is only ONE language, not the ONLY one.

those fish could also be crenicichla proteus juveniles too. maybe not with the red gill spot, at least not the ones i had.

if you grow them out to 60 cm's (24"), they aren't regani's he he.

Hi Rick!!!
For sure if they grow to 60cm they're not a regani... hahahahaha
I'll buy a "new house" for them to be alone and we'll see what will happen with those baby-fishes!!! hehehe
About the crenicichlla proteus, I had one, that was my first fish!
This fish is very smart!
But I hadn't the knowledge to grow this fish well and I had to sell him 'cause it had caused me too much trouble in that time, it was a serial killer in a aquarium!!! hehehe
Bye!

i had a couple of spawns from a nice male proteus i got to accompany 3 females i had saved from a group of 8. he would pick the girl he wanted and the rest needed to be removed. i didn't get to grow them out though, he liked the look of them as food too much.
