I`m going to veradero Cuba this December and was wondering if it would be possible to go collecting anywhere near there. I know a few of you have been on collecting trips so any tips would be greatly appreciated. i`d just really like the experience and to see the areas they come from first hand!

Thanks.

if you find any apistos on Cuba you'll probably shock the whole scientific world :) forgive me if I misunderstood something. I would think of checking the regulations very intensively before. it could be interesting, I can't think of any Cuban fish species well known in the hobby, although they're probably there in the rivers.

I would like to plan and execute a collecting trip to Brazil, or anywhere else in SA, where apistos can be found. perhaps some of you have similar plans/dreams and it would be possible to make them true? you can find well priced flight tickets to Miami and from there to SA. there are also nice collecting trip offers, the more participants the cheaper.
what do you think of an (un)official apistogramma.com collecting trip? :)

O.K. I didn`t neccesarily mean apistos but I guess I did poste it in the apisto section. And I can`t say that I knew there were no apistos in cuba so......my bad.

No popular aquarium fish in cuba? maybe I`ll find some  Move over Uwe, Brad`s on the quest to find new species in Cuba!

I was searching a bit on google:

some fishes to be found in Cuba;
Dormitator muculatus, Girardlinus metallicus, Poecilia vitata, Cyprinodon variegatus, Cubanichthys cubensis, Rivulus cylindraceus, Gambusia puncticulata, Gambusia punctata.

Only two domestic cichlid species can be found:

Nandopsis tetracanthus:

I have some Girardinus metallicus. A livebearer from Cuba.

I wouldn't class it as 'popular' but you do see them occasionally in the larger fish stores. I've also seen the Cuban Limia, Limia vittata, at auction.

Thanks guys. Any idea how to get hooked up with a collecting crew? I`m sure it`s more complicated than hopping in the water with a net.....

Per,
as per my e-mail, I currently only have contact with Margarita Tours, but I remember having some more. I remember an ofer from some Brazilian with Polish sounding surename, which was 250-150 $ per day depending on the q-ty of participants... couldn't find it yesterday though.

those of you, who participated in collecting trips in SA - don't be selfish, share the contacts ;) or take us aboard next time :)

I just returned last week from Peru with Margarita Tours! We collected a lot of Apisto's! Mostly agassizii, Pebas, Norberti´s and Eunotus. Pebas might be algadon I or II. I don't get the fish until Thursday, so I won't know exactly what I got til then. I am bringing back over 60 apisto's!
Tides were really low and waded thru a lot of mud. Some of the streams were dried up a lot but still had fish. We came across one stream that was the clearest one we collected in but only found one apisto and few tetras in it. I will have a list together of all the places we collected and species found in a few weeks if anyone is interested. I am also bringing back a lot of loricaria and farlowellas.
Margarita Tours was great with everything. My plane was 8 hours late and they were still waiting for me in Iquitos and drove me two hours by speed boat to catch up with the tour boat. Even though I missed the first day of collecting there was still fish there from the days collection for me to choose from.
Devon and the crew treated us great! I would recommend Margarita Tours to anyone. It was everything I heard it would be and then some. For info got to their website: http://www.amazon-ecotours.com/

Thanks!
