I was at the LFS today and found 8 very small apisto's in a tank of D.filamentosus , there over-all markings were very similar to the young checker boards .

They are 3/8 - 1/2 inch with blue cheek /face markings , the caudal fin has a dense pattern of white bands/spots .

I know this is not alot to go on and I need them to grow out abit and pics would help.

I was told they were shipped out of columbia , so what I'm asking is
what would a good guess be ( if the came from the same place as the checkers )

thanks

Hard to get pics as I put alder cones and almond leaves in that
tank and the water is quite taned , they are also hiding .

Do I know you ?

Are you with a club or work for a LFS ? , as I sell a few apisto now and then

Probably not... I work in the non-profit sector in HIV/AIDS and am a member of Toronto Willowdale Aquarium Society only. Never been to any of the auctions... yet. although I do hear KWAS does a great auction every year.

I regularly see you two both on different forums and such..

I'm in Oshawa myself.. Planning to get to the KWAS auction this year tried to go last year but was rather ill and was not up for the drive.

Tell you what come to the DRAS auction and I go to the KWAS auction..

AL's here in Whitby had some apisto's that come pretty close to your description tagged as opaline. (spelling probably off).

Before I moved from Seattle to Eastern WA I always looked closely at a store that would ship in box lots of their Cardinal Tetras. These shipments always contained various odd ball Characins like Copella and also sometimes juvenile Apistogramma. I loved discovering a few Apistos too small to easily identify.
I found three on two different occasions. One trio turned out to be A. pertensis and another time they turned out to be A. gibbiceps. These were always special discoveries and the owner would sell them to me for a $1.50 each.

I was able to get a pair of each and went on to breed them. I miss not being able to find them anymore. There is only one decent fish shop here and all the Apistos they get in are the tank raised species bred in the Czech Republic and these will usually cost $20 to $35 a pair.

I have found apisto's in shipments of otto's , dwarf cory's , tetra's and
now the checkers .

Like you said the best part is not knowing what you have and trying to
grow them out to breed them .

Yes most of the expensive apisto's are mostly the czech bred and
very nice looking but I like the wild stuff .

On your guys mention of Filamentosus being at Big Als... I checked at the one here in Vancouver (Richmond) and they have a whack of juvies!! They are <3cm but in good condition. I personally grabbed 6 in the hopes of getting a couple pairs. Such beautiful little fish!

I did

No luck though :frown:

They did have a couple of double red aggies left but I'm outta space and I'm really stuck on Santarems! If only I could find them here in Canada...

I am a big fan of Dicrossus filamentosus. I too. prefer wild caught dwarf Cichlids.
Despite all the new and beautifuul more recent Apistogramma species, I still place wild caught Apistogramma agassizi high on my list of favorites.
