Anyone have a good picture of the female steindachneri?

Hopefully its a pair of the same species.

Thanks.

Hej Pär!

They are definately Steindachneri´s!

I have kept Steindachneri for a couple of years now, and they are just lovely apistos. It´s a big and quite peaceful species. They are one of my absolute favourites among the apistos.

Unfortunately they are very sensitive to the quality of water. Not so much the ph values but more to the amount of detritus and other vaste that are gathering in the corners. It´s very important to have a good filtration and do regular water changes. Too much bacterias in the water will cause bad infections on the fishes.

They are quite fond of some vegetable content in their food. I have fed my Steindachneri´s with mashed green peas once a week with good result. Though the basic food is mysis and mosquito larvaes.

The Steindachneri is the apistospecies which lives (acc. to my experiences) closest to pair relations. A pair can live peacely together in a tank for years and raise frys without aggressions towards each other.

Here are some photos of a nice pair of Steindachneri. The female have the typical yellowish coloration.

Good luck with your Steindachneri´s, Pär!

Hello cootwarm

Yes, Steindachneri are nice to keep in colonys. I have kept fullgrown males and females together in the same tank without problems.
But it is important that you let the fishes grow up together and let them form their social hierarchy.
If you try to put grown fullcolored dominant males together in the same tank, they will probably kill each other.

Look at the photo at the top of the page, you can see a couple of my grown Steindachneri males together in a 250 litre tank.

Hopefully I got a pair. But when a store sells fishes without the right name you cant be to sure.

I will try to take a photo of my "female" to let the experts tell.

Hej

The male is a Ap. Steindachneri but unfortunately the female is a Viejeta (?) female or a small Viejeta male.

Hi Froo,
I don't think you can tell the females apart because it's very tough to tell viejita and macmasterii males apsrt. I think females would be even more difficult. Here is a link to a thread where this topic was discussed in the past:

Hi P.W.,
Sounds good! I think I'll give it a try. I got 3 pair of F1 juvie steins from ApistoDave last month. I currently have them in a 30 gallon long, I guess I'll keep them there for a spell and see what happens. Recently some wild caught steins have come available. I'm considering a couple pair of them if they're still available.

Hi Michael

Could you buy some of those wild caught Steindachneri´s?
Please keep us posted how the "colony" is developing. I really hope that everything will turn out fine.
Looking forward to see some pic´s from your tank :)

Hi Per,

It turned out that they weren't wild caught, so I passed on them. I'll stick with the 3 pair of F1 steins I got from Dave. They are still young and so far getting along great. I'll let you know when things begin to happen.

Michael
