Apistogramma Cacatuoides Males???

Hi,

I just got what was supposedly a pair of Apistogramma Cacatuoides but I think they're both males, can some more experienced keepers please give me their views.

I'm pretty sure the larger of the two is a male but the other I'm 50/50. The pics with just one Apisto in is the one I'm not sure of. There doesn't seem to be any aggresion between the two whatsoever, which I would expect if they were both male.

Any help appreciated.

I would say you have two males. You normally don't see the amount of red and the pattern in the tail in females that I'm seeing on both males in your pictures. With domestic strains of fish (like double/triple red cacatuoides) many of the markings and color traits can be blurred and females that often wouldn't have color sometimes do though. But that is A LOT of red and the patternering is seldom seen on females. Also, the ventral fins (lower paired fins) should have a dark leading edge to them in mature females and neither of your fish have that.

Pretty fish none the less though.
