Hello I purchased some apistogramma macmasteri from a local fish store. The store there said they were brought in from a local breeder, but i just found out that they are Apisto. brevis, does any one have any info on the care and breeding of them. the two fish are showing signs of court ship and should be be spawning soon any info would be helpful... thanks.

VUE,

That suprises me a little! What makes you think they are brevis? A. brevis is a species that has seldomly been imported into this country. The breeder that the store got them from must surely have been careful with them and not made the mistake of selling them to a store that would sell them as macmasteri!?

They are difficult to breed, requiring soft, acidic water for viable spawns. Look on Apistogramma.com for my brief profile of them. I just wrote it recently. I think it is still on the "Latest News" box on the main page.

If they are brevis, good luck with them. Please take some pictures for me. I neglected to get some of my pair sometime back. Rare fish!

apist. brevis

I have compared the fish to the pictures in the Dwarf Cichlid atlas 1 pg. 321 and 323, and the fish are pretty much identical. I will try to get some pictures up soon. Thanks for the info.. Vue
