I have a 40g that i was going to stock with geophagus but i have just learned the type i like will get to big. What could i stock in this with after a pair or two of apistos?
the possibilities are limitless. instead of a pair you could always house a group of apistos. this will allow them to behave more naturally as they do in the wild. if you only want the pair of apistos you could add a school of hatchet fish for the top of the water column. in my 40 gal show tank i have a school of rummey nose tetras along with the a. cacatuoides colony. otocinclus(spelling?) cats do very well with apistos also. alot of people keep pencilfish with apistos as well. depending on whether you want your apistos to be able to raise fry to adulthood you could have corydoras or dwarf pleco spp. but they tend to eat eggs and fry. i even have a tank with discus and a. cactuoides they get along great. the cacs have spawned and raised fry but so far the discus have not. the combination of discus and cacs is one of my favorites. hope you can get some ideas from this.
Another good one is A.cacutoides and Emperor Tetra. This keeps colour at both the bottom and middle/top level of your tank. The Emperors are great dither fish and make the Apistos more secure when they see the Tetras swimming about.
Also Otocinclus (gotta love'em) and Corydoras (egg/fry eaters..)
