I use the rule, that if I, the human, can tell which one is male and which is female then the fish surly can as well. If they are showing sexual traits then they are sexually mature and can breed.
I try to have all my parents raise the fry. Yeah it may cost you a spawn or two (until they figure it out), but in the long run isn't that why most of us keep cichlids in the first place?
