You asked if these set-ups are 'good' for breeding. IMHO I don't think so, but it could work. You never know with apistos. I have had species breed on the back corner glass of a bare quarantine aquarium. Apistos are geophagines and like all eartheaters spend a lot of time sifting sand for food. Bare tanks do not allow this behavior. Your tank is a bit open, but does have a couple of suitable territories. I really don't see any suitable breeding caves. Breeding cave need narrow openings. In tanks with substrate, the female will often spit a sand berm in front of the opening if it is too large; not possible in a bare tank. Large snail shells have no place in a softwater breeding tank. If it were my tank, I would add about a ½"/1cm deep layer of fine sand on the bottom and add more plants/wood/rockwork in the back half of the tank.

Hi all,
Have a look at ApistoBob's pages on dwarf cichlid tanks. Bob is a member here and, like Mike W., he is full of good advice.

This is a spawning tank set-up for a pair of A. macmasteri.
