My couple has spawned Saturday :D The parents are doing a great job in protection the eggs and the territory. They are nearly alone in a 200 liters tanks, so fries have a good chance to grow up :D

My question is how much times before the fries are free swimming ?

Dear Xanathos,

Congrats on your spawning success!

At 78-degrees F., your fry should be free swimming in about five days.

Good luck!

Can you give the details of your water parameters? I've got a pair I've tried everything with. Raised pH/TDS, lowered pH/TDS, changed temps, heard they didn't like to spawn without sand, so I put sand in their tank. My female is so yellow the panduro in the next tank are jealous. But I have yet to witness anything that even resembles spawning activity. The male is awesome looking too, just wish they would get to it.

thanks,
Ken

Hey, :)

I would be very happy to help you breed this magnificient species.

First off, let's me explain the context, because I feel that it has something to do with it. The tank they are in ( a 55 gallons heavily planted tanks ) was plagued blue green algae, so I was making huge water change in the hope to get rid of that pest. For 1 week I was adding RO water mineralized at the same Gh as the tank ( nearly 80 ppm )... 1 week after thei adaptation in the tank, I began making water change with pure RO water only to bring hardness and ph down. I must also say that during that first week, I did not feed them well, maybe 2-3 times a week because I had heavy work to finish... Two weeks before they spawned, I was heavily feeding them : blood wurms, frozen brine shrimp and live brine shrimp, in big quantity, like 3 meal per evening. The week juste before they spawned, I did a 30% water change with cooler and pure RO water. 1 week after, I was cutting plants and siphonning that bloody BGA and I noticed the female being very yellow and protecting a small side-oriented clay pot :D After a careful observation, I was able to see the eggs on the roof of the clay pot :D

About the sand bottom, my tank has chocolate 1/4 gravel. So I guess sand isnt that important to make them spawn.

I havent seen a single fry yet, but the female is protecting her pots very carefully. Mr. mouthbrooder isnt very active yet, but stay close to the spawning site.

Actually I think but i'm not 100% sure that the female is mouth-brooding the fry. I guess i'll see them free swimming tomorrow :)

I hope this help, please let me know if you want more details on something

I now have nearly 50 fry free swimming under the protection of the female. They are real moutbrooder, I saw her taking the brood in her mouth :)

If anyone is interested in getting fries when they'll grow up, just contact me by MP.

Phil

P.s: it seems that a sandy bottom isnt essential to succesfully breed them
