So last Friday I added some coconut shell pieces, and noticed the male chasing away others from one of the shells and saw the female in their guarding the eggs. Since this is a community tank, I am not sure how long or if any of the fry will survive. I just enjoy watching natural behavior.

That's a monster of a tank. Hope you apistos don't suffer from agoraphobia :)
Over the past year my tanks have become increasingly shallow. Starting with 24" tall 90 gallon to 16" tall 80 gallon (48x24x16), to 12" tall 50 gallon (48x24x12), and even plastic tubs with only 2-3" of water in them. No apistos in the latter but someday I'm going to make a shallow creek-bank biotope for apistos out of one of them.

Good luck with the breeding!
