    Steatocranus irvinei

I had another spawn from the second pair that numbered about 150...combine that with the 60-70 left from the first spawn, I might have trouble getting rid of these too.

    Steatocranus irvinei

OK..I got a few better pictures. It has been a struggle with lighting. That side of the tank has some large plants that prevent me from using the flash overhead and the tank is deep and they are always in the back..they may be a little darker than I like, but I will keep trying

    Steatocranus irvinei

Jeff, That is another month away so they should have enough size to send plenty back with Ted. My water is liquid rock. pH around 8.4 with hardness readings off the chart Right now I have 2 pairs in a 125. A pair has claimed each end of the tank.

    Steatocranus irvinei

This is a crappy pic, the fry are wedged into a spot between breeding log and pile of sand parents created, but I have about 125 fry from a recent spawn

    Thoracochomis brauschi

I love this fish. The males are absolutely beautiful. I have been able to sucessfully keep 3 males in a 55 gallon tank. The 2 who staked out end territories looked incredible. The guy in the middle was a bit more stressed, but still a stunner. I have a group of about 8 of them right now.

    New cichlid in the congo

The fish is Lamprologus lethops. I have a couple of pictures of them, but will have to get permission to post. They are blind and have no pigmentation at all. Only a few have been collected and never alive. I believe there is a picture on CRC

    Steatocranus sp. "square head" spawn

Anton wrote back and he says they are bleheri, so I don't know where that puts us now. The Kisangani look more elongated to me than this species. I have the collection point at home in another email. I will check on that and post again.

    Steatocranus sp. "square head" spawn

This is getting interesting now. Anton and Uli think they are definetly sp. bleheri. I sent the pictures to them and Anton has been to the house and seen them in person. I am going to throw Anton an email real quick

    Multiple new Steatocranus species

The new species are very exciting. The coolest one was the sp. "super slender". Anton came down here about 3 weeks ago and gave a talk on riverine cichlids of West Africa. He had warned me before he got here that I would see some pics of species never seen before and he was right. It was by...

Sorry for this being so image intensive, but wanted to share a timeline of the Steatocranus sp. "square head". Ted, if this is violation of the image policy let me know and I will edit the post. 30 days old 40 days old 60 days old 90 days old 180 days...

    Steatocranus sp. "square head" spawn

Very interesting to read everyone's observation on this fish. I did not experience any disease, but like most of us, I am particular on my upkeep of my tanks. Anton recommended that I do not split them up when they exhibited pairing behavior and to keep the others in the tank with them. Did...

    Steatocranus sp. "square head" spawn

Not great pics as they won't come out of the breeding log, but pretty excited about these.

    Thoracochromis demeusii

Calling them nasty is an understatement. Might be the meanest fish I have had
