    Apistogramma Macmasteri advice please

I have a pair of Macmasteri. They have had a few broods of fry successfully. My male has been a bully and chased the female. But then she has done the same to him as well. If it gets too bad I just separate them for a while. At the moment they're getting along well and not breeding.

    Ph always drops

My two cents: I'm not as experienced as the guys commenting above. I've only kept apistogramma for just over a year now, but I think this makes me perfect for beginner advice. I hope one of the others will correct me if I err. 1) Do at least 50% water changes every week. The few problems I...

    Apisto agression

I'm certainly not an expert, but I have bred Cacatuoides, Nijsseni and Macmasteri now and have had a few experiences with aggression. The main thing I've learned is that it can change fast and usually has to do with the breeding cycle. My Macmasteri pair are pretty even in size and have both...

    Sexing Nijsseni

The only aggression was when the female had laid eggs until the fry were free-swimming. If she saw him she would chase him away. So he hid for a week. Then he was allowed back out. Although it seemed as though he was never fully welcome. She was always flashing her tail at him. Maybe that's not...

    Sexing Nijsseni

I have too many fry at the moment. I don't have room for any more grow outs at the moment.

    Sexing Nijsseni

I enjoy watching these fish. They have so much personality. It amazes me that at times she is bossing him into a corner and then it swaps and he's ruling the roost. The whole time they have had fry she has been posturing at the male. I wondered if it was a 'back off' dance or bonding or what. He...

    Too Soft?

I saw them on tannin.com and I have one in my front yard, so I'm glad. Thanks for the reading.

    Too Soft?

When I used the loquat leaves in a bucket to prepare my water change water, I added it to a couple of tanks and lost fish. I think it was you that said I need to add an airstone to the bucket because the leaves reduce the oxygen. I thought it was ammonia because I had high readings in this...

    Too Soft?

I'm stepping lightly with the leaves after the last scare I had with them (that you replied to). Also, it's only getting towards autumn here so I have to wait to collect a supply. I have plenty of loquat leaves, but I'm slightly scared off them. Maybe I'll try again with an airstone. However, I...

    Too Soft?

Thanks for the reply Darrel. Yes, I know it's much better to have soft water to start and that I can add hardness. I can dose epsom salts for Mg. Yes, you're right, the table the water is 6ppm Ca (which I assume will be in ionic form). I was just worried that was too little for the health of...

    Too Soft?

Hi, I have read a lot of posts talking about people preparing water for their Apisos. However, most aren't fortunate enough to have soft water out of the tap, so people are mixing RO and tap water to get the right mix. Some use only RO water. My tap water is very soft. Below is the average...

    Sexing Nijsseni

I really have no idea. I have to go on what other people say. I have heard a lot that nijsseni are fussy with partners. These two took to one another instantly and have bred in a matter of weeks. Would that happen interspecies? I'll try and get a better photo.

    Sexing Nijsseni

Yeah, I was actually going to do some research on testing ammonia in tannin-stained water. I freaked out a bit when water that had only been put in a bucket with leaves the day before was testing at 1-2ppm Ammonia. My water is extremely soft out of the tap, but my pH is never very low. That's...

    Sexing Nijsseni

Some great news. I decided to take them back to a shop I frequent to trade them in. Lo and behold they had some Nijsseni for sale with some unmistakably female specimens, and the rest looking along the lines of my two. So I decided to keep my larger male and exchange the smaller of the two for a...

    Sexing Nijsseni

Thanks a lot. The female doesn't look like any of the photos or pictures I've seen (except maybe the head shape). I was expecting obvious spots. They are getting along pretty well and the water is probably not ideal for them to breed. I have a black water tank set up that should have a lower pH...

    Sexing Nijsseni

I bought what I was told was a male a. Nijsseni months ago to try out another species. Another shop that deals in lots of apistogramma had some so I asked for a female and I bought it. I put it in a tank with the male and a male Agassizii (who had their own territories set up) but I wasn't...

How do Wean fry off live bbs?

No. I haven't tried it. I'll have a look when I can go to the LFS again... if we are ever allowed out again. I tried feeding all these other foods with BBS on days I was low. Will keep trying. They are 2.5 months old. I tried frozen BBS, not the large ones. They were just as small as the live...

How do Wean fry off live bbs?

I have been trying my fry on different food. Keeping up the BBS is expensive. They have rejected nearly everything so far. Flake food, egg yolk, frozen BBS, blood worms. They just spit them out if it's not live BBS. I have just recently tried culturing microworms. They eat those. But I need to...
