Female A. sp. Tefé and A. agassizii - differences?

The problem is I got two males when I was meant to get a male and female. In this part of the world Tefés are pretty rare so I can imagine that people are going to be very reluctant to part with females. Taking into consideration the quality of my male, would you make the effort to obtain...

Female A. sp. Tefé and A. agassizii - differences?

For someone just reacquainting themselves with Apistogramma I maybe could have chosen a different species to begin with... Thanks again for your assistance, it's great having someone with your knowledge contributing to the forum.

Female A. sp. Tefé and A. agassizii - differences?

Thanks for clearing that up for me. So would it be safe to say that it may only be possible to determine if a female is an A. sp. Tefé after the eggs hatch and the quality and number of fry are there to be seen?

    g'day

Are they Laetacara curviceps? If so they're pretty fish when in good condition... I agree with Mike BTW, I don't think that's anything to worry about...

Thanks for the replies. I'll give it another week and then put it in the fry tank.

Female A. sp. Tefé and A. agassizii - differences?

Hi all, What are the best ways to tell the difference between A. sp. Tefé and A. agassizii females? I've only seen pictures of A. sp. Tefé females so forgive me if the difference is obvious. Thanks in advance, Russell.

    Sponge filter run-in time...

Hi all, I'm currently running a sponge filter in an established tank with a view to moving it to a grow-out tank when it's sufficiently colonised with bacteria. Is there any hard and fast rules as to how long colonisation should take? I'm currently running an airstone in the tank and...

    CO2 diffusers

Another alternative is a cigarette filter (the type you buy if you roll your own). They push into standard airline and give off an incredibly fine mist of bubbles. Best thing is they're around $2.00 for 100 so when one clogs up you just replace it. I've used them for years and have found that if...

    Apistogramma agassizii "Tefe Bauana"?

If I was able to obtain female A. sp. Tefé could problems arise when breeding if they happen to be from a different part of the Rio Tefé? Just wanting to know if it's worth trying to find some females when they'll almost definitely come from a different source than the males. Thanks in...

    Apistogramma agassizii "Tefe Bauana"?

I paid for a verified pair (male and female). I know this is often pot-luck when the fish are young but this source is very reputable and only offers verified male and female pairs. I certainly wouldn't have paid what I did otherwise...

    Apistogramma agassizii "Tefe Bauana"?

Hi Mike, Are you 100% certain that they are both males (I certainly don't doubt you but I'd like to be sure before contacting the store)? I paid a good amount of money for a pair so if they are 2 males I'll be a little annoyed to say the least. Thanks for your response, Russell.

    A. agassizii "Tefe Bauana"?

Hi Andrew, I was confident that it was but two people whose opinions I certainly respect weren't so sure so I thought I'd put it to the experts. Thanks for your response. ~Russell

    Apistogramma agassizii "Tefe Bauana"?

I posted a thread in the gallery section regarding the identification of an Apisto, probably should have posted it here. Here's the link (any help would be appreciated). http://forum.apistogramma.com/showthread.php?t=4600

    A. agassizii "Tefe Bauana"?

Hi all, I had these guys shipped to me as A. agassizii "Tefe Bauana" but I've since been told by someone that they may not be aforementioned Apisto. Could someone here please let me know what they're thoughts are regarding identification? Thanks, Russell.

    Activated carbon and peat...

Thanks Andrew. I never used carbon in any of my tanks either in 10 years of fish keeping until a friend recently convinced me that I should... Never had a problem before so I'm no longer seeing the point of using it either. Do you know of any other functions peat performs other than pH and GH...

    Activated carbon and peat...

I have read that peat should not be used in a filter with activated carbon because the carbon will nullify some of the peat's properties. Does this mean that the carbon will also lessen peat's ability to reduce pH and soften water? Thanks in advance, Russell.

    Which filter?

Hi Scott, Thanks for that, I haven't tried my hand at deliberately breeding fish before and completely forgot that these are the preferred option for a lot of people. You probably saved me around AUD100...:) By saying that you run two filters does that mean two per 20 gal tank? Thanks...

    Which filter?

Hi all, I'm looking at setting up a small Apisto tank (20gal) with perhaps 3 Ap. baenschii and am now trying to decide upon a filter. A HOB filter would be fine for three fish but I would like to breed them (with any luck), with the increased bio-load of the fry what sort of filter should I be...
