    A. ortegai or cf ortegai 'Pebas' female?

Thanks, Mike! The males in the store tank all looked like Papagey to me, and I was told they were all from the same breeder. However, in the weeks before I picked up my fish, I had seen some 'Pebas' for sale on the local forum; the seller had been encouraged to trade them in at that same...

    A. ortegai or cf ortegai 'Pebas' female?

Hi all, I bought a couple of fish from a tank of what looked (to me) to be all male A. ortegai. I gambled on the pale runt-y one hiding behind the filter, and lucked out--she's female! All the fish in that tank should have been descendants of the ones in this other thread, and therefore...

Help ID an external parasite, please!

Update: I've been dosing PraziPro per label directions, but some parasites are still visible on my borellii. The Danio margariatus he shares a tank with don't seem affected, though.

Help ID an external parasite, please!

I'm reading that praziquantel has supplanted formalin or organophosphates as the go-to treatment for flukes, and that it should be effective against anchor worms too. I'm in luck--both prazi and formalin are already in my cupboard, so I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the advice...

Help ID an external parasite, please!

I have an A. borellii male with a case of some external parasite (photo below). There are small, worm-like things on his sides and fins. When I first noticed them, they were no bigger than a microworm, but now the biggest ones are much thicker than that. They are on the surface of the fish...

    A. borellii sub-dominant male vs. female morphology

Beautiful fish, ErtyJr! Thanks for the advice. I did put the suspected male in another tank, and he's coloring up well.

    A. borellii sub-dominant male vs. female morphology

Can you point me to a thread with that information for A. borellii, or is it more or less the same across species? I'm new to keeping apistos. On a related note, if this is a subdominant male, I think he has the potential to be prettier than my current dominant--he has more irridescent blue...

    A. borellii sub-dominant male vs. female morphology

Can sub-dominant males also have black on the first ray of their pectoral and dorsal fins? A few of the web resources I've found seem to use that to distinguish females and sneaker males, but I have a borellii I suspect is male with the black coloration. (S)/he has gotten markedly larger and...

borellii picked a fight with siphon

Thanks again Mike, for helping me understand my fish!

borellii picked a fight with siphon

Well, in a startlingly short amount of time, he's at least regained enough tissue on his face to color the scraped patches back up. His dorsal fin is still gnarly, but he's busy doing a little horizontal shimmy dance and flashing his colors for the females. Is going from max blue/gold to pale...

borellii picked a fight with siphon

Hi Mike, thanks for the advice and the kind words! I don't normally keep these guys at 30°, nor do I want to keep doing it--the fateful vacuum was in response to the first signs of ich in the tank, and I'm trying to use heat as part of the treatment. Hopefully, I'll be back to 24° in another...

borellii picked a fight with siphon

Three days ago, I accidentally vacuumed up my male A. borellii while doing a water change. I figured it was just a clump of java moss or subwassertang when I felt a jerk, but imagine my surprise when my poor fish went down the tube into the bucket. He's missing a bunch of scales from one...
