Hexamita
Hello Doctorp,
From what you describe, the bloat and white, stringy feces affecting your fish and the filter situation seem unrelated. I agree with fishgeek in that the symptoms observed correspond to intestinal protozoa. The treatment is Metronidazole.
Good luck!

Hemichromis sp. "Guinea I"
Hi Chugger,
The photos in both Linke & Staeck and Lamboj depict mature specimens. The coloration exhibited depends on how the camera catches the subject fish at the instant the photo is taken. Yes, in the hobby, Hemichromis sp. "Guinea I" is also known as H. sp...
"pfk"
Hello Refael,
I've found "PFK" to be a good general magazine. Additionally, Matt Clarke does a nice job reporting on what's new and noteworthy. If you sign up via the "PFK" web site, you will receive periodic email messages alerting you to new online content...
Hemichromis sp. "Guinea I"
Hi Chugger,
There are some nice photos in Linke & Staeck's and Lamboj's books. Alternatively, why don't you just get the fish yourself and take photos for the rest of us!
Good luck!

Hello friends,
Just when you thought all was quiet in Nanochromis land, we have yet another newly described species, bringing the species count to 11. N. teugelsi Lamboj & Schelly, 2006, is described from the Kasai Region and the Congo River upsteam to Lake Tumba. It is one of the group II...
Pelvicachromis taeniatus
Careful about associating place names with Pelvicachromis taeniatus color morphs, guys. The place names commonly used in the hobby do not necessarily correspond to the location from which a particular color morph is collected. In the hobby, we basically use the place...
Swollen red gills
Hi Cathy,
Sorry to learn of your gill problem.
In the absence of poor water quality, over crowding, or extreme pH levels, swollen red gills could be due to a number of things. A parasitic infection could be the culprit, but you note that there are no signs of...
Sexing Hemichromis spp.
Hello Chugger,
If you care to send me a photo or photos of the fish in question, I'll sex them for you.
Good luck!

Suitable dithers for Hemichromis spp.
Hello Kevin,
Any partial list of suitable dithers for Hemichromis lifalili would have to include Boulengerochromis microlepis, alligator gar, mud skippers (they can jump), and snapping turtles. Okay, okay, in smaller aquaria (</= 55 gallons, sexually...
Hemichromis letourneauxi
Hello friends,
So sorry for the long overdue answer. I was waiting to hear back from Paul Loiselle before divulging the identity of the last mislabeled photo, but Dr. Loiselle was away for the past two months.
Although the Hemichromis sp. depicted in the...
Hemichromis sp. "Ankasa"
Hello guys,
The photo here depicts Hemichromis sp. "Ankasa" from Ghana. This form is remarkably different from H. lifalili for several reasons, including range and color pattern. H. lifalili was described from the Congo River basin in the DR Congo...
Hemichromis sp. "Moanda/Muanda"
Hello friends,
As Ted states, Hemichromis sp. "Monada" made its way into the U.S. from the DR Congo a couple of years ago. It bears a superficial resemblence to H. stellifer, with which it is sympatric, only the coloration is reversed. While H. stellifer...
Hello Nebraska,
Thysochromis ansorgii is supposed to be a pair-bonding cave spawner that utilizes concealed areas with larger openings to breed. In aquaria, however, anything's possible, I guess.
Good luck!

Peat moss-treated water
Hello Lars,
Activated carbon does not remove humic acids from peat-treated water; it removes the chemical tannins that give the water its 'tea' color.

Treating water with peat moss
Hello Cathy,
Filtering water though a RO unit does not remove all of the trace elements from the water. A well-functioning unit, however, should remove over 90% of them. Because RO filtered water is so soft, hobbyists will usually reconstitute their filtered...
Treating with peat moss
Hello Brad,
Activated carbon will also remove the 'tea' color from peat moss-treated water and not alter its chemistry, although some black water species seem to thrive in the colored water. As curviceps suggests, you want to use pure peat moss with no additives...
Hello Mike,
50 litres may be too small for your pair unless they are highly compatible. Like other Nanochromis spp., N. transvestitus males can be rough on females, especially when spawning.
A pH of 5.0-5.5 is necessary to breed them. Using discus strength water (KH 2-3) and then...
Hemichromis sp.
Hello Ted,
What's this Hemichromis sp. in Jeff Cardwell's fishroom? It exhibits no diagnostic dark markings.
