if you are looking for a white or light colored sand substrate then you might try pool filter sand(PFS). I have used it in a bunch of my tanks and it cost about 7-9 dollars for a 50lb bag. any pool store or maintenance business should have it. looks nice and dosen't compact
It's tough to give you a straight forward answer. it may work, depends on your fish and how much cover there is to keep them out of each others line of sight. I think thats kind of what everybody else is saying.
They've been eating decaped brine, paramecium, and really pounding micro worms. I noticed the other female has a clutch now too. She's the 'odd man out' but, somehow its working. I've been looking at getting a grindal culture. We have our club meeting thursday so i'll ask around. -Bradley
Had these fish a while with out any luck. Moved them to a 20 gallon and had eggs within a few days. Here is a video of what the fry looked like today. mom has been a very good parent so far.

you know, that was what I was kind of thinking. I saw some sub adults at a pet store here in town this morning and they looked pretty much like the same fish. Well... I guess I'm on the lookout for some L.C's or L.D's then.
Well, that could be the answer I was looking for(still neat fish though). I'll grow them out and ask again later. still pretty small. anybody else bought this fish? -Bradley
Hey sorry to bug everybody again. I got some pictures of the fish. Not 100% sure what they are. orange on top of dorsal fin and pretty bold line through body? ordered 8 and was sent 10! -Bradley
I got them from someone off aqua bid. they are still posted... I'm not sure what these guys are. they are pretty small and all the stuff I've read about white trim and blue hue doesn't seem to work for me. There is a blue-ish tinge to this fish though?
Thanks for the info Mike.
And... I did some research last night when I got off work. I think they are L.C's from the picture that the seller had up. Either way gonna be neat fish.
So, this is what I am doing today:

sand, bunch of flower pots, lots of oak leaves, and quite a bit of wood. I've had trouble with my pebas eating eggs and the eggs getting fungus'd. They are in a smaller tank now but bred easily in a 33 for the guy I got them from. Thanks for the info. Laetacara should be here tmrw!
I keep reading that most fish are miss-labeled and really are L. dorsigera. Both are neat fish. They are Going into a 50 breeder. Any worries about aggression with other dwarfs, apistos or issues with acidic water? I would like to put my pair of A. Pebas "Rio Ampiyacu" in this tank too.
