The theory, as I understand it is that ammonia/ CO2 increases in a shipping bag. When the bag is opened a sudden increase in PH is caused by CO2 being driven off and since ammonia is more toxic at high PH, the fish are in immediate peril and need to be gotten out at all costs. The temp. change...
I have been reading a thread on another forum about netting a new fish out of the shipping bag and directly into your aquarium. In other words skipping the float the bag or drip in a bucket method because it is more stressful. What do ya'll think about this?
Hi all. I'm a frequent lurker and infrequent poster. I had a supprise this morning. A little plaque of N. taenia eggs! They are in a 55 gal. tank with a group of young P. subocellatus and some young BN ancistrus. I didn't think they were old enough to spawn yet. The little female is barely over...
I picked up a pair of these guys ( I hope it's a pair ), a couple of weeks ago. They seem to have settled well into a 20 gal. long. Tankmates are (4) 2" bristle nose plecos. PH 6.8, GH and KH is about 3. I have read that PH could be a little higher and they are vegeratians. That's about all I...
Arringfray, have you started your cycling process yet? If not, you may have more problems when you do that. My water is similar to yours. Slightly acid and very soft. The KH (buffering capacity ) of your water is low which makes your PH unstable. The cycling process creates acid which lowers the...
Any word on when Neil will have fish for sale again? In the meantime, does anyone on here have westies for sale. I've been studying here for several months now and have several tanks ready. I'm interested in purchasing 5-6 different groups ( 2-3 pair/ group). Pelvicachromis, Nanochromis, others...
The West African ( for example ) forum indicates that over two hundred threads are available but when I click on that forum only ten or so show up. How can I get to the others? I like to read!!!!
Forgot to add. Several of my tanks now have a healthy layer of plants floating. I'm slowly ( as time permits ) adding lights in my fishroom. About 1/3 are done now. I think the plants are helping also...
Trevor, nitrate is not causing the PH crash. The tanks are still cycling. Nitrate is not present. Ammonia is causing it. What you said is good news tho. Water changes, I can do. So after I get a handle on this, maybe everything will settle down. Several of my tanks have completed cycling now...
Fishgeek, thanks for your concern. I started adding baking soda to many of my tanks. All these have completed the cycle and are doing fine. The others have not. I have ordered some "ro right" to help buffer. I will keep you posted.
So the rule of thumb ( watts/ gal. ), everyone seems to want to use, should probably be changed into some watts/ depth formula. Let's start a REVOLUTION!!! LOL. BTW, I have lights up and surface plants in eight of my 22 tanks so far. Plan to do more this weekend.
