New genus of West African cichlid

Sometimes a new genus gets created for a new species description, but then it takes many years before people bother to publish papers reassigning the previously-described and obviously related species into that genus. This seems to be the case with Lamprologus and Neolamprologus. In some...

    Sexing some dwarf cichlids

Keyholes (C. maronii) are tricky to determine sex. Males can get long fin filaments, but non-dominant males and females are nearly indistiguishable to me.

    Copella callolepis disease

Or possibly iodine deficiency was not really the cause of the swelling, even though the external symptoms looked similar to goiter. Hope you next batch does better!

    Early Christmas gift!

Yeah my tanks get hot in summer too; I have a 1902-vintage house with no basement in central NC. No obligate coolwater species for me, unless I can pass them on to friends for the summer. Newborn fry can actually do quite well if properly shipped; it's pretty common in aquaculture industry...

Apistogramma Panduro - Pairs, Harems, Breeding

You may be surprised by how small 55 gallons seems when there's more than one breeding pair.

    Aggresive female apisto hongsloi

You have our permission to set up more tanks. If you need a signed certificate from Apistogramma.com to appease family members, let us know.;)

    Early Christmas gift!

Great news! I'd be very happy to get a batch of newly hatched fry, raise them, and distribute any extras to Dicrossophiles on this forum. If siphoned out as wigglers and shipped in breathing bags before they start feeding, i'd bet they'd do OK. I can send you a small thick-wall styro and...

    Apistogramma Help

    That's moderately soft; total Ca+Mg Hardness 46-61 mg/L (as CaCO3) = 2.5 - 3.4 dGH. Alkalinity 31-42 mg/L = 1.7 - 2.3 dKH. Conductivity 18-21 mS/m = 180 - 210 uS/cm (units typically used in aquarium lit). Looks like your Sydney water is just a wee bit harder than my local water in Raleigh...

    Apistogramma Help

Your city water department might have hardness (GH) and alkalinity (KH) values of their treated water system posted online, for comparison with your home testing. If not, a phone call to the water testing staff might get results. Ask for Hardness and Alkalinity; they will give you mg/Liter...

Male apistos lost all color and breathing heavy.

OK, I hope you're correct. I usually expect to see ragged fin edges or missing scales if he's being attacked enough to make him lose color and stop eating.

    Early Christmas gift!

Don K just told me that his pair came from you, so my males are grandsons of your fish. If you (or anyone) knows of other folks in USA keeping D. maculatus, please let me know.

Male apistos lost all color and breathing heavy.

"no sign of damage" indicates the female is not beating on him, so he may have some kind of internal infection, based on heavy breathing and loss of appetite. I would get him out of the tank before he dies, so as not expose other fish to high concentrations of whatever pathogens may be inside...

    Borellii fry

Another option is to take out some of the fry (with net or siphon) and raise them in another tank. You don't need to catch them all.

Male apistos lost all color and breathing heavy.

If you cant set up another tank, can you at least put a screen divider in to separate them? Has he stopped eating? Is there any sign of sores on head/body, abdominal bloating, or eyes bulging?

    Early Christmas gift!

Hellfishguy - do you still have these D.mac's? I need a couple females. If by chance you need males, Don Kinyon in VA has extra males.

Ideal temperature for ideal sex ratio

Keep in mind also that the temp effect on sex occurs when the fry are a few weeks to a couple months old, not at the time of egg-laying. So if you find an unexpected new batch of eggs, their sexual fate is not sealed - you can still influence it.

Aarhud’s 125 gallon Apistogramma Tank (Not a Biotope)

That part IS interesting! I would have guessed the Herotilapia fry would bully and outcompete the Apisto fry for food. Maybe having voracious feeders as tankmates encourages the Apistos to eat more?

Ivanacara adoketa male laying on its side

His eyes and skin look OK. Watch for Camallanus worms, redness or swelling at anus, and watch out for other fish picking on him. It's not clear what's wrong (from these photos), so all you can do is wait and hope for recovery (and keep him safe from aggressive others).

what do you do with the fry?

Best thing is to join a local fish club if one exists, or create one if not. Then share offspring with your local fish buddies. Or you can sell them online, but packing and shipping fish can be a chore.
