A Juwel Rio 125's dimensions is 81 x 36 x 50H cm? I think a single pair would be fun in this size. Or a male and a few females, if there is plenty of structure (leaf litter, plants, PVC pipes, caves, etc that block line of sight).
Many people in Singapore keep 1M1F in tiny tanks (30x30x35H cm...
Hi rockey
I'm from Singapore. There aren't many Singapore-based people on this forum. Most of the apisto keepers are active in Facebook groups or WhatsApp chats. If you'd like to join up on any of those, drop me an email or PM here, and I'll put you in touch. :)
In Singapore, some stock (juveniles, can't be sexed) was available at about USD 12 each about last month. But they were snapped up pretty quickly And I missed them! :(
Hi Edison
Think I bumped into you at Adrian's shop earlier this week (you told me about your mendezi). Simply Cichlids is pretty much the best place to get apistos in Singapore. The other places I know of that do stock apistos regularly are Qian Hu, C328, Y618, Green Chapter, Aquatic Avenue...
Thanks Darrel - very helpful and interesting as always. Love the community here - it's the nearest I can get to the marine and German aquarists' science geekery. :)
You're right! And I use Seachem Safe now actually - which has been working well - the fish are generally happy and breeding.
Think I get too hung up trying to obtain water with low electrical conductivity. I know it's not really an important parameter compared to GH and pH (hat tip to Ted Judy...
Sometimes the mothers move the wigglers to another site.
High temps aren't so good for another reason though - the eggs and wigglers develop and hatch very fast, and are small when they become free swimming fry. Which makes them hard to feed
Many thanks Darrel, that Randy Holmes-Farley article and Amquel page was very informative.
I had previously thought these dechlorination products were just sodium thiosulfate in fancy bottles!
And seeing Randy's report on activated carbon makes me think that's the way to go in future. Much...
Many thanks for explaining this! :)
This made me google and it seems that people (beer brewers) sometimes use acetic acid (vinegar) or ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to remove chloramines. And it seems like a low pH also converts monochloramine to dichloramine (which can gas off)?
I wonder if...
I have about 30 young adult A. diplotaenia which are all offspring of a WF1 male and a wild-caught female. The group has slightly more males. I think a quarter to a third are females.
I'm in Singapore but would love to ship overseas, if you can find a shop near you which can receive fish from a...
How do the sponge filter and organic matter help? Are they good as surface area to support bacteria colonies which break down chloramine? I'm curious because I now pass water through peat in a filter sock (the kind used by reef keepers) for a few days in a reservoir tank before water changes...
Hi Darrel
I've used leaves from this locally popular ornamental tree Ficus lyrata (fiddle leaf fig) in my tanks for a while with no issue. I do soak the leaves in boiling water a few times before use though. I like them because they decay very slowly - I just noticed that the fallen leaves...
I'm not good at this, but both look male to me, because of the tail fin colour pattern (red edges on top and bottom), the head colours (quite a bit of red and blue markings), and the dorsal and anal fins look quite elongated (in females the end portion wouldn't extend out as much).
Thanks Mike and Tom for the photos. I really can't say - just a newbie here - and there are so many spectacular fish out there!
But comparing the local fish with this photo - I'd say no they don't look like the same fish. The only similarity is the abdominal stripes. And the location of colours...
Hi aarhud and Darrel
Dero worms appear as contaminants in tubifex sold as live food here. A local hobbyist has written an account of how he cultures dero worms. I've tried culturing them before but the growth rate for the real estate makes them unattractive. I also recall coming across a paper...
Here are the best photos with raised dorsal fins I could get. They were very shy and were quite peaceable - I saw this one instance of fin flaring the entire half hour I was there.
I also noticed the tail does have the top and bottom red edges so characteristic of the macmasteri group - but the...
