    Apisto Identification help please?

The new one is also a female panduro. The amount of black can be quite variable between females but they all have black on the ventral fins.

Please help to identify this Apistogramma

    A. panduro and nijsseni are distinct species that look relatively similar. I agree with Mike that it is very likely a (young) male. Panduro males tend to have the central part of the tail fin with a bluish colour, yellow for nijsseni so I guess that is what you have.

    Apisto from Rio Meta?

    Only for being sure...cacatuoides?

I think it is a young male cacatuoides. Leading dorsal spines will grow with time and tail will likely become more lyrate as well.

    Gymnogeophagus caaguazuensis

Thanks. Unfortunately, after a few days of fasting while holding the fry the female started eating again and the fry either died or got eaten. I also think that the number of eggs that hatched was probably 20% or less of the ones that were laid. So both the parents and I have to get better at...

    Apistogramma Megaptera

That is a spectacular male you have and I see even the female has some red just before and below the pectoral fin. I hope you get to see them breed.

    Apistogramma Megaptera

Megaptera used to be called sp. 'Kurzlappen-breitbinden' because it has shorter dorsal spine extensions and more limited to the front of the dorsal. So this looks like a proper megaptera to me. I should be able to get both megapter and piaroa next weekend and look more into their differences then.

    Lets Talk Dicrossus

I have both species but haven't kept them together. The maculatus is quite assertive though and should be fine. I've also had the filamentosus with different apistogramma species and Laetacara dorsigera and they held their own. So I would fully expect you can keep them together but as always I'd...

    ortegai sexing

I agree that this is not ortegai or even something closely related to it, but it is from the regani lineage and it looks like a male to me. It could be a colour form of A. regani itself which has the very tall caudal spot but there are others such as A. sp. 'Masken'. Chances are Mike will chime...

    Dicrossus sexual developement

Mine were wild caught. I've had groups of 6-8 wild caught apistos all turning out to be males (agassizii) or females (baenschi). I think it depends on seasonality and plane (bad) luck, but if you buy young fish it is a risk you should be willing to take. Most of the time I get at least one or...

    Dicrossus sexual developement

I bought 1M+2F D. maculosus that turned out to be all males. Later my supplier got a new batch with females and send me three that all developed into males again. So for me it has been a challenge to get females for the maculosus. For D. filamentosus I got 2F+4M from a group of 6.

    Light temperature?

IMO too many people lose sleep over this. Sunlight is about 5500K but in nature water, floating plants, a forest canopy etc all change the spectrum and plants can deal with a broad range. Total amount of light is more relevant than small variations in colour temperature. Most of my tanks use...

    Gymnogeophagus caaguazuensis

Two weeks ago I got a pair of Gymnogeophagus caaguazuensis one of the smaller members of the genus with males maxing out at 4" SL. They spawned two days ago and I wrote a blog with images about the experience. I hope the eggs will hatch later today or tomorrow. The blog is at...

the luxury problem - baenschi breeding

I've had a baenschi pair start a new spawn while the previous few week old fry were still in the 20 gallon long tank. The mom focused on the new spawn and chased the others but no damage to the older fry was done by either parent as far as I could see. It becomes harder to feed the older fry as...

    ID Sex Laetacara dorsigera

I don't see anything that convinces me one way or the other, but they both look very similar hinting same sex. Lack of dorsal fin ocellus and bit pointy soft dorsal suggest male, but the dark breast suggests female. I've only had my pair for a few weeks and with many fish there can be...

    Stocking a 12 gallon tank

I keep a pair of Apistogramma allpahuayo in a standard 10 gallon tank with Nannostomus marilynae as ditherfish. A. allpahuayo is a very close relative of A. cacatuoides and similar size. Like others I do prefer 15 gallon and larger tanks but this pair needed temporary housing and started to...

    ID Sex Laetacara dorsigera

I have a pair that matches Gerald's description. In particular the clear ocellated spot up in the dorsal fin is a prominent difference. The male has two spot-like features where the dorsal attaches to the back of the fish. I just moved one of them tonight. Once I catch the second and they settle...

    Apistogramma keeping & breeding

    A. sp. Abacaxis is actually quite likely to be next. I have a first spawn just reach young-adult stage but haven't seen any of the males develop the purple chin yet. I also observed some weird behaviour with this species that would be nice to put in the blog. Maybe the Easter long weekend is a...

    Hello From Canada!

Lucky to have a place like the Afishionados in town. He just had A. piaroa but sold out already. Good luck with the hobby.

    Hello From Canada!

Nice to see another Canadian, there's a few of us here. I'm in Edmonton keeping and breeding about a dozen apisto species, all but one wild caught. But also starting to branch out to some other cichlids (Gymnogeophagus caaguazuensis, Laetacara dorsigera, Geophagus sp 'Gold dust', Ivanacara...
