Nice job. My C. sabinae were great parents. I imagine that goes across the entire genus. They raised two spawns in a 75 to sub-adult size. Biggest thing is getting enough food to the fry and clean water. Seems like around 14 days after free swimming I would lose quite a few. No idea why.
Greetings! I have volunteered to take on the Picture of the Month (POTM) contest for our Apistogramma.com Forum. Please take some time to read the following and provide any input.
The first contest under these proposed rules will begin in May. The rules may change depending on input and/or...
My solution always seems to evaporate from inside the cap after a couple of months of non-use; the probe dried out, and now, apparently, I have a pH of 9.0+ in my softwater tanks! Time to buy a new probe...because I would estimate the pH is somewhere around 5.0. Have tried calibrating several...
100% organic or natural sphagnum peat moss. Get some panty hose, stuff a golf ball sized amount of peat moss into the panty hose, tie it off, cut off excess, and soak in the tank. Water will turn a light brown -- that's OK. Check pH every 24 hours. Might drop quickly at first so best to...
You could try removing some of them, and leaving some. Seems like every time I remove all the fry, the mother will go ballistic on the male. If I leave a half dozen or so for her, she normally does ok, even if the remaining fry don't make it.
Wonderful looking tank.
I would be concerned with the wide fluctuation of pH; 6.5 to 7.5 is quite the (daily I'm assuming) swing in pH. Is there a way that you can turn the flow of your CO2 down so that it is a gradual infusion rather than turning it on and off?
I'm fairly certain that the...
If I am having a difficult time getting a spawn out of fish that I keep, whether it be apistos or any other fish, (keeping in mind I do very lightly stocked 75 gallon tanks), I skip a couple of my water changes and let the tank go for about two to four weeks without a change, and then do a 75%...
Have you ever eaten apisto eggs? They are surprisingly tasty. Although, I like corydoras eggs the best. I've accidently 'destroyed' a couple of apisto spawns (batches of eggs) and decided to taste them. Not bad at all! I had a bunch of mixed cories that would breed every three days. I just...
Please don't use treated wood. The chemicals in those things are NASTY. Save some money and buy some nice straight boards. If you are worried about rotting, paint a couple of coats of high gloss paint on your normal wood. Your health will thank me later.
Regular play sand compacts the worst.
I have found that pool filter sand doesn't compact so much because it is lighter and I can have deeper sand beds.
The anerobic gasses will only build up if you have sand at depths greater than one inch. You could also get malaysian trumpet snails to stir up the sand, thus preventing most of the sand from getting compacted. You can also use your gravel vac to stir the sand up a bit. Generally, though, the...
One thing I noticed about the image provided in the link is that the 2x4s that the tanks sit on are laying on the 'long-side' down; it would greatly improve the strength of that part of the rack to turn them up on end.
If it's possible, I'd recommend getting a head-on head-shot. The first photo the fish has a rather large jaw; but not sure because of possible image skewing.
I'll take the first stab -- and don't trust what I say, wait for the experts...
but I'm going to guess that it is A. eunotus. Would be difficult to (me to) tell for sure without a companion male.
