Hi,
I'm not a very frequent visitor of the forum and normally only browse the 'new world cichlids' pages.
Now, I wanted to post a question and stumbled over this unanswered thread. That's not good.
I'm not an expert, but as nobody else has answered, I'll give my 'two cents', with an obvious...
Hi, all.
Thanks, Mike.
I'll do a more thorough search on this subject.
They will be in a 350G nature aquarium-ish set-up. There will be lots of (small) plants, as I will cut and spread my plants to cover as much ground as possible. As it will be viewable from both sides, it will be an island...
Hi, all.
I have made some unscientific 'research' and I can't find any real differences between Apistogramma species nijsseni and panduro.
Their type locations and distributoins appears to me to overlap, environmental demands are the similar, behavioural and morphological characteristics also...
Hi, all.
I'm curious about the identification of biotopes, not an individual.
Take, as an example, the River Ucayali ... It's a white water river - am I wrong in my assumption that most of the populations (A. panduro, A. bitaeniata A. Agasizi) identified from that region usually do best in...
Hi, all.
Here are my Apistos.
I'm preparing the setup of a 1300liter (330G) - and my fishies are waiting for their new (and larger) home in a cramped space. But it's overgrown and they seem to get along with good appetite and nice coloration.
It's 3♀ and 2♂.
Substrate is the biological...
Hi, all.
@TCMontium I'd say it's the other way around: if there is buffer present, that avoids sudden changes in acidity. Without a buffer substance in pure H2O, any small amount of OH- releasing substance will spike the acidity.
But like you, I'm no ace in chemistry. Hopefully someone more...
This whole region is a granitic mountain with some areas of slate - all of Hercynian (/Appalachian) age. Normally granite is considered an 'acidic rock', as opposed to basalt or limestone. I do not know if the bottled water is measured after aeration, but my guess is it is measured at the...
Hi again.
Thank you all for your valuable inputs.
I just visited the municipal water service and the officer in charge of water quality let me check the samples.
The most recent values are from last October (end of dry season after which there was an unusual drought all through February...)...
Thank you, Mike.
I'll keep that in mind. Maybe add peat extract, oak leaves, or the likes. As the hardscape will be made with local rocks and gravel (granite), that will also keep the pH on the acidic side - not much, but consistently.
Hi, all.
I'm getting ready to set up a large aquarium, mainly to house Apistos and tetras.
I have moved away from Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to a mountainous region in the central part of the country. The mountains are granitic and local spring water has the following characteristics...
Ah, ok then. "20L" was misleading to me. 20 gallons is a little better. If you maintain a high level of complexity in your setup, you should be fine.
You should be wary of your maintenance, waterchanging and measurement of (especially) nirtates.
Keep posting on the forum.
;)
Hi, everybody.
@nuimom, be careful not to overstock your tank.
You mentioned it was a 20 liter. With a dozen rasboras, some cories and some neon tetras -- it seems crowded...
If your Apistos are still juveniles, let them work things out, eventually pair out. But once theiy do, you should think...
Ok, once I move in, I'll contact the local water supplyer and ask for a recent report on their additives.
Right now, during winter, my guess is there is so much water in supply in the mountain, that there possibly isn't much or any desinfectant at all - in the summer, it will be different...
Hi, Mike. Thank you for your answer.
"...a dechlorinator is needed. It is inexpensive so why not use it?" Well, mostly because I'm planning on moving home, and to a somewhat remote town. There I am planning on starting a BIG tank and wanted to know wheather or not I could become independent upon...
Hi, everyone.
A simple question.
Is it possible to de-chlorinate tap water by simple aeration?
Let me elaborate - if normal tap water is put into a big tank and intensely aerated for several days, will the chlorine be chemically altered into a harmless state?
Thanks in advance.
Hi, everyone.
Another issue that IMHO is just as important, maybe even more, is to assert if it's a blackwater-biotope, a whitewater-biotope, a hardwater-biotope...
The chemistry can be more differentiating than location. It's at least an area where accuracy is important.
Just a sidethought.
Hello, everybody.
Even if you can get a pair of opposite sexes, that will not be a guarantee the you actually have a couple. Most cichlids are sensible fish and need to select their own partners, not to have them chosen by a human.
So, even if you might pay some more for getting a school of...
