So i did buy several of these - they range between just under 1/2 inch to about 3/4 an inch. This shows the relative size to the tetra:
I put them in a 10 for now with some other critters. I purchase a few others because at this size i thought they would be fragile but they seem quite healthy...
Most 'dithers' stay high or away from an angry mom. If you have 'dithers' that stay low and try to poke at the frys then yes.
The problem is what you call 'dither' - that can refer to anything and one can't say yes or know without knowing the species or behavior.
I mostly keep wild caught...
It sounds like if i want to move a tank raised fish from hard water to soft water i need to first move it to medium water before the final destination so it has time to adjust? Maybe a week or so.
[In all cases i'm talking about fishes native to softwater]
Looks like a bacteria infection and she needs treatment - i would let other chime in but i've found kanaplex laced food (if she is eating) works well - basically mix the food with the powder in water and then see if she will eat it. There are different types of bacteria infection - gram - and...
Can you explain why and is the issue the different type of bacteria in the water or the stress in change of mineral content or is it more empirical and less scientific ?
Mine were wc hybrid (story in another thread); but while one of the female was very aggressive to the other two females the other 3 fishes did not show much aggression - though my aquarium was quite large being 3 times longer and twice as wide and space does of course makes a difference but...
I should mention that I'm seeing the issue more with tetra then with cichild but i did have a group of domestic ram immediately develop bacteria infection when put in discus tank - of course wc rams did not have this problem. While the source was the same it could have been a bad batch of fish...
I bred them easily enough - 1 male 3 females in a 65 gallon (48 inch x 16 inch bottom); all three females bred together in different parts and the male would make a circle each morning to visit them all - i used pure ro water so a bit softer. Not 100% sure where the cut off is in tds for the...
So i'm making some assumption that the issue that tank raise fishes have with very acidic water (below 5.5) is the difference in bacteria but my observation seem to be that buying tank raise fishes frequently lead to infant death (first 2 weeks) but wc fishes do fine but conversely putting wc...
For those who like to count frys:
Gotta say on the one hand these west africans are really good parents - they are a bit excessive on the recreational play. Of the west africans i've kept these are the most entertaining - i esp like how the parents will bring the frys up front for feeding...
And nothing beats 'aquarium' salt. You can buy 50 lb agricultural salt for around $0.25 a lb or pay $8 for 33 oz of api rock salt (though to be fair the pond version is a little cheaper per pond).
Oh well some people sleep better getting the aquarium version of equaliberum rather then mixing...
There is no guarantee - it all comes down to the genetics of the parents and as farm raised fishes you know nothing about their genetic. They will be what they will be but it might take a year to full flush out.
one is an odd ball and 10 is company. I've ordered some very small tetra/pencil fishes from wetspot before (1/4 to 1/2 inch) and have had a few that 6 or 12 months later i just have to ask myself where did that come from. The problem is that at such a small size colours haven't even fully formed...
The problem is 'tefe' is overload - there is a species 'tefe' and line bred tefe (which is a colour)... I believe from other posts on this forum species tefe has a more zagged central line....
I really wish 'tefe' domestic line didn't exist because it really confuse people sort of like macs...
Yea - it grows like a weed in blackwater; the only real issue is it prefer cooler water and i find 78 borderline and anything higher really retards it but at 76 it can quickly cover everything.
