Tom C's web page is always a good place to find new and interesting info. Looking at it today I see pictures of A. guttata. This is one of my Holy Grail fish. I collected them in 1997 and 1999 in the location pictured below. This spot on the Rio Morichal Largo was an idyllic spot in a river that...
I obtained this fish a few years ago from one of the exporters in Iquitos. He wouldn't say where it was caught. He only had a few specimens. Could it be cf.cruzi or cinilabra? Sorry if I posted the pictures incorrectly. Had a difficult time figuring this out.
I have had good luck with true Siamese Algae Eaters when they are young. They clean up the black beard algae very well. However as they get older, they don't like the algae as well as other food.
You are correct Mike. Both color forms are found together. I collected these in Bolivia. Not only were the two color morphs found together but both would come from the same spawn when they were in my tanks at home.
I have done this the same way. Add the methylene blue until there is little visibility and partial water changes once the eggs hatch. I don't think you need a lot of water movement. An air stone isn't needed just some airline tubing and some gentle bubbling.
Had similar problems with my barlowi so I artificially hatched her eggs multiple times. I placed the small flower pot in which she laid her eggs into a plastic specimen container that hung inside the aquarium. That kept the temps equal. I put enough methylene blue into the container water until...
Mike, maybe a comparison between the apistos from the Amazon drainage with those from the Orinoco drainage. Also perhaps those fish from the white sands regions compared with those from the mud bottomed streams.
I've been using r/o units from Back to Nature Filtration for years. He has a wide variety of capacities and prices. You can check them out at Backtonaturefiltration.org. He also has accessories such as pH meters, etc.
I do not keep mine in a stabilizing solution and the probe tends to dry out. I wet the probe and wait about ten minutes before taking a reading. Seems to read accurately. I calibrate about every 3 months. Readings are the same before and after calibration.
Often the lights used in the aquarium do not show the fish very well. In the sunlight our apistos look like jewels. Then in the aquarium the fish look various shades of brown. The 6500K plant lights don't seem to help. What lights have others found that compliment the fish colors?
In an earlier post, Jeff (Aquatic Clarity) mentioned the lifting of the export ban on Brazilian fish. Can anyone give us more information on that? Is it possible to collect again in Brazil?
