What temperature is your tank? Discus do much better in warmer temps; above 80 (so Rams would be good campanions). The other fish would do better at temps below 80 (like angels).
Our fish club is doing a group buy from below. They sell other vegetation to produce tannins. You may want to try some other leaves (as for magnolia parts, they appear only to sell the cones).

I only have 3 show tanks; as time gets more limited (new baby), trying to figure out how to decrease time on maintenance for the tanks. Maybe w/d and sump is the way to go.
