I dont use Facebook often, theres not usually anything to interest me and i prefer the forums.. However Heiko has recently posted on Apistogramma barlowi and id like other people to back up my arguement that the picture is of the wrong species..
Im not one of these people who dislike Heiko...
Just a quick note to update this thread!! these fish are agressive, very aggressive!! My female suffered at the hands of the male when he wanted to spawn and as soon as they did spawn roles were reversed and the female was hyper agressive.. Nothing too unusual there but these fish are one of the...
Hi Dave, do you mean a 3rd copy in the series, a brand new book??
If so, yes i would update my collection and add the third book to my collection. Price and content depending obviously!!
It all depends on the pair.. I have pairs of Apistogramma that will raise up almost every offspring to 10-12 weeks when i then remove them, i currently have several pairs that are so eager to spawn again that they attack, kill or eat every single fry to make way for the next brood 1-2 weeks...
Well Tom im happy to announce the winner of your competition was...... Ray, he beat me by 48 hours.. He sent me a lovely picture of a clutch of 30-40 eggs on tuesday evening and my fish spawned thursday morning! he beat me by 24 hours :), coming second to Ray is not embarrasing at all :) ..
Im with Mike, you have just put me off buying any Apistos from Thailand!!
Here in Europe Apistogramma hybrids are virtually unheard of, i can only speak of the UK but we are all purists and i dont know of any hybrids being produced by hobbiests, anyone doing what Melanochromis is doing...
No problem, heres a picture of one of my old females.. As you can see all fins are completely clear. Females dont show much if any colour in the fins although there are female cacatuoides appearing with lots of red, its possible that this is happening with domestic lines of agassizi?
Well after a few months of having some quite common fish in the fishroom(to help pay increasing energy costs over the cold months) im back at what i do best.. Apistogramma!!
Ive got a cracking stocklist at the moment, all fish are healthy and a good size, i have pairs of all fish available...
Spot on.. A.atahualpa, i did think they may be huascar but its now pretty douptful. There were 4 left alive after 24 hours and luckily it looks like two pairs. They will stay in the fishroom now for a long recovery. There are also a few A.norberti and cacatuoides amongst the deads. As a very...
Ive done this cross in the past with exactly the same parents, my female was a domestic albino and the male a Wild caught fish.
The two colours seem to be co-dominant with both being expressed almost 50/50 in the first generation.
My spawn was very interesting, once freeswimming and...
Thanks Hudson, without your informative posts the world would be a much duller place.
The picture below must rank as one of the prettiest habitat photos ive seen from South America.. Beautiful.
Just thought id share a few pics..My A.elizabethae have been showing a lot of interest in each other over the last few days.. Fingers crossed for the patter of tiny fins :)
Hi all, thanks for your patience in waiting for cichlidae, we are slightly behind due to a committee members recent illness but are catching up quickly and hope to get future issues out on time!!
The January 2012 issue is now available for download here...
Not quite true, female A.sp 'steelblue' are available, we see male heavy batches hit the UK from time to time but they usually contain a few females.. The trouble is the females can carry a lot of blue making ID hard..
No one knows 100% that A.sp 'Steelblue' is a hybrid, its highly likely...
Thanks Tom, i appreciate that, someone also replied on the BCA forum and has shown me a UK supplier.. Its actually cheaper than expected and i can feel a fishroom refit coming along in the future.. Cheers, Ste
