Welcome to the forum. A 30 is a nice size for rams. I would imagine you could keep more than one pair, but with appropriate decor. Lots of hiding places and the like. Mind you, when I kept rams I had a pair only in a 20. They'll be bottom oriented fish as cichlids tend to be.
The reason you cut that wood for firewood is because it burns well. The reason it burns well is it's full of oils, just like the leaves. I would not use it in any aquarium because of the worry of leaching....
I had a F1 male until a month ago or so. He was my longest living Apisto. He was at least 8 years old. It's too bad, they are a gorgeous fish. Hope you find some males.

Unfortunately we do not live in a perfect world. The LFS isn't trying to mislead you but is only going by what their supplier tells them the fish is. I guess it's sort of like buying used cars. Sometimes you get a really good deal, and other times you get sc****d.

I suggest that you test your local water.
Take a reading after filling a container. Take a reading an hour later, and a day. It may be that the water has some buffers in it.
They sound like they are leucistic to me.
Albino - white fish/red eyes
