Welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of great information here. Many of the people here are specialized experts but you can find the answers to almost any question yo might have.
Best of luck with your first dwarf cichlids.

Last week I posted asking for help IDing a female apisto (here is the thread http://forum.apistogramma.com/showthread.php?t=7758) and Mike provided A. gephyra as a likely answer. Today I got a couple of males from the importer and sure enough Mike was right on the money. Here are a few poor...
Mike,
I have been back through my photos and I do not have a good one of a caudal that shows the markings. They are few and light, mostly near the center. They are definitely not a prominent feature.
I will try to get a better shot if I can.

I received three of these wild Apistos. They have all turned out to be female. I purchased them as A. pausisquamis but that ID has been questioned. Any opinions as to what they are.
thanks
Bob
I think that there are two reasons with the most important being money. It is much easier to sell a new fish, especially one that is rather drab, than a long established species. Therefore, many exporters will assign their own trade name to a species that has already received a name from one or...
I have never used power heads in any of my dwarf cichlid tanks. I don;t believe that they add anything to the basic requirements of Apistos. In nature most are found in water with little current. Although I agree that extra oxygen may be beneficial I have always found that a gentle stream of...
Both set up's look fine to me. I would probably add a few small caves in the aggie tank. You have a very complex environment so there are plenty of places for the females to take cover but there is not much breeding cave habitat in my opinion.
Also, the bronze corys will be a problem if the...
I got pretty excited about ten years ago when I found a group of similarly spotted wild cacatuoides. They were really quite interesting and I tried to breed for the characteristic using father/daughter and multi-generation sibling crosses. None of the subsequent fish produced the spotting. I was...
In the past few days I have gotten a couple of inquiries from South Africa looking for dwarf cichlids. Does anyone know of hobbyists, breeders or dealers there?
Bob
Ted,
Good for you! I've always wanted to go on a collecting trip and I hope it is a great experience. Will you be able to bring back any of the fish you capture?
Yes, my conditions do stay fairly stable. Unfortunately, I can't give you exact measurements since I quit doing regular testing years ago. I only test now if I suspect I have a problem. Rather, I closely observe my fish and know what is normal. Any behavior or general appearance that is off...
You can find a lot of different opinions about this topic. Personally, I use 100% RO (not RO/DI) in my tanks. Many people say that RO water is too pure and unstable. They maintain that it is best to either mix with tap water or add a RO water conditioner to the water. Over the years I have tried...
I have also had good success with www.brineshrimpdirect.com.
I also have had good results with the eggs I purchase from www.kensfish.com.
As with Mike, I buy the 1lb (typical though sometimes 15 oz) cans. I will get anything from 80 - 90% hatch rate depending on the price/value when I buy...
Hongsloi can be kept in typical Apisto fashion. In my experience the wild fish are much better breeders and parents but the line bred strains are much more colorful. Unfortunately, many private breeders find they cannot achieve the same colors in the offspring as the parents. I have heard that...
Java Moss, Java Fern, Watersprite, various Crypts, Chain Swords, Wisteria are all staples for me. They all do well in my tanks with no special addatives and no need to tinker with the water values.
