Introducing microfauna: scuds, amphipods, isopods into botanical tank

California. Just need them as scavengers to find and eat the food fishes might miss. I need a blackwater shrimp since Im trying to get this tanks ph to around 6 or less. I think the exoskeleton of crustaceans might be sensitive to the waters composition e.g. dissolved solids and can create...

Yes I think thats the wikipedia one! And thanks for the Latin name of the shrimp! Will definitely keep a close watch for that!

Introducing microfauna: scuds, amphipods, isopods into botanical tank

Arent rotifers more abundant in acidic, black water than in white water habitat? Speaking of shrimps, Ive been looking for south american blackwater shrimps but they dont appear to be available at all

Introducing microfauna: scuds, amphipods, isopods into botanical tank

Hi! So far I have not had any luck getting microfauna in any of my tanks except for detritus worms Recently dabbled in the botanical method of fish keeping and I think I might have to introduce these inverts on purpose. Has anyone ever tried bag of bugs from Phillips Fish Works? I wonder if...

WC Apistogramma cacatuoides Rio Purus, I think there will be fry soon!!!

Beautiful fish! Curious, what are those white stuff crawling around your tank? Did you seed them or they just appeared naturally?

Uncommon, smaller, elongated (gar-like) surface-dwelling tankmates

I saw one of those gobble up a tetra a 3rd their size. Definitely not good for tetras.

    Unexpected Ivanacara bimaculata spawn

Thanks! I actually like how tight the pair bond is, even tighter than that of discus pairs IME. The female doesnt mind the male in the cave with the eggs and they seem to always swim around around. Also they dont look like they are prone to pecking other fishes - when the tetras come too close...

    Unexpected Ivanacara bimaculata spawn

Ivanacara bimaculata unexpectedly spawned today. Curious why the female was sticking belly up towards the roof of the cave. TDS is around 120 PPM, GH and KH are both at around 30 PPM each. I initially had A. macmasteri here but decided to transfer those to a nice 20g since the fish size-to-tank...

Uncommon, smaller, elongated (gar-like) surface-dwelling tankmates

Hi! Looking for some smaller (not more than 4"), cool-looking surface dwelling fishes that resembles a gar/pike. Preferably something elongated and that can happily live in acidic / low hardness water / blackwater. Was looking into Acestrorhynchus nasutus but it appears they are quite rare...

    Advice on buffering water

this pretty much answers my question. Since I am greatly reducing my tanks TDS to be under 50, I was concerned that PH will gradually creep so low. Just to clarify, we dont need an alkaline agent like crushed corals to stop PH from going so low like under 3?

I think finally completed my tank (should I add some more dither?)

Have to figure out how to pull my spray bar lower than usual to increase distance between water surface and lid. I tried cutting some tubes yesterday but they all cracked.

Transitioning a stocked tank to have more acidic water without causing cycle crash

Thank you all for your input! I was sure the only logical way is gradual but better be sure!

Transitioning a stocked tank to have more acidic water without causing cycle crash

Also yes. Also will have to keep measuring chemistry due to evaporation, residual hardness and stuff. Thanks! I think im convinced!

Transitioning a stocked tank to have more acidic water without causing cycle crash

Yes. But since i would be adding dead leaves and stuff, not sure how fast it would lower the ph. Would it be fast enough to shock the non acidic bacteria? Those were the questions in my head
