I have both hongsloi and cockatoo (different tanks in different rooms) and I was noticing that when the females put on breeding colours (yellow); they are in many ways quite similar. How exactly do you distinguish between the two ?

Here are four pictures - 2 of the cockatoo and 2 of the hongsloi:

Hongsloi have a spot in front of the caudal fin, also the head shape is different and the cacatuoides has more pronounced spikes on the dorsal aswell as stripes on the abdomen.

The head shape was less obvious to myself but I did notice the dot. Bit amazed that they are so similar. My cockatoo female is always yellow 24/7 but this is the first time in several months i've seen the hongsloi turn yellow.

The lateral line on the Hongs is more zippered shaped compared to the cacatuoides. Are these fish on fry or eggs? They look like there in brooding colors.

Absolutely right, I was also going to add that, but then again, when in full breeding dress my A. hongsloi has a solud black bar on her sides. I know there's more but the most obvious things have been said now.

The cockatoo is always yellow so I'm not sure what is up with her - she did lay eggs about 8 days ago but snails ate them.

The hong is almost never yellow - maybe the second time - but i've not seen eggs - in both pictures they were hunting food as i just fed them.

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
