Yeah! That’s what got me confused. There is Guyana (as in home to my bimac’s), Surinam and then what I thought was called Guiana or french guiana.

-aaanywho… here is another great link.

As I understand it, French Guiana is a "department" of France, sort of like Hawaii and Alaska are states of the USA but not physically connected to any of the other contiguous states.

More like Puerto Rico legally speaking, but that's just as I understood a french colleague.

French Guyana is actually a DROM, or an overseas département and region. They have the same status as a département or region in mainland France. Other DROMs include Réunion, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Mayotte.
