Had been disappointed w/ my pics of my male trifasciata w/ flattened dorsal fin. Tricked using mirror image on side of the tank & it worked. Tried technique w/ my male borelli & got a different behavior response. Is this individual or species specific?

Yes displays are different in different species-groups. The nijsseni-group species, for example, have dark gill membranes they use when they flare their gill covers. Cacatuoides-group species, among others, have enlarged lips that make them look larger when they open their mouth in frontal display. Some species-groups use frontal display while others use a lateral display.
