Palm fronds

I have access to palm frond bases. Soaked in water, they turn the water brown. I thought of using them in my aquariums but we have a toxic algae here that kills fish.
I'm wondering if I wet the palm fronds then microwave them if the fronds would then be safe to use. Thoughts?

I would boil them. That will remove the tannins and kill the algae spores.
