Laetacara dorsigera confirmation

Picked up a pair of juvenile laetacara "cuviceps" from a local shop, they came from living artworks Fish farms, usually very good with their cichlid and species IDs but I'm pretty sure this is dorsigera anyways. One has a much more prominent dorsal spot than the other not sure if this indicates sex or just a difference in pattern.

Photos aren't the best but I'm pretty sure that's the red chest coloration you can make out in the last photo?

Yep, those are indeed L. dorsigera.

Yea - my l. dorsigera were also sold as l. cuviceps. Someone who works on the distribution side told me that some major distributor has been renaming them for years and that is the issue for domestic. Mine were the blue/black form.

When courting they will have dots on the dorsal fin - 1 for one sex and 2 for the other

Thank you. Up on a closer inspection, the less distinguished dorsal spot is indeed two spots , seems to blend in with the barring a bit more.

I have bred a number of these fish and as they grow their spot seems to come and go depending on their juvie coloration verses adult coloration. I have not seen any connection to sex. I look more at the length and shape of Dorsal | Anal fins, body shape and behavior.

I've heard a number of ways now to go about it including specifically pelvic fin length. With any luck I'll get a few more and form pairs via colony.
The two I have have their own blackwater esque planted 20. I just moved the juvenile topaz out to the 120.

I was told the 1/2 dots were always assigned to the same sex; also this species is pretty docile and i would think they can make a nice coloney however they are also not as small as some species of apisto so a 40b would likely be needed for the extra room. In my 180 i have 6 l. araguaiae with 2 breeding pairs. Naturally they chose opposite end of the aquarium (72 inches). One pair is pretty reclusive but the other generally mingle with everyone when not breeding.

Id be keeping a pair in the 20, my primary group would be in the 55. 20s a bit tight beyond that. I'd throw them in the 120 even but these topaz are going to be a bit much for them once they grow up.

In case you don't already own the 55; just be aware it is kind of a lot of wasted space due to height. Even with dithers it provides a lot of space that dwarf cichild won't use.

Already set up, more of a convenience than anything, was simply housing a very aggressive braziliensis who's got new digs. Plants came in nicer than expected figure id let it ride.
