I'm trying to ID a couple of what I understand to be two male Bitaenata's. The pic. are two that I am buying and have permission to use these pictures, but the seller wishes to remain privet, mods. if I've done something wrong please let me know and I will try to fix. I guess what I'm asking is type, I new to apistos, and if there are sub spices.

Hi all,

We can only see the thumb-nails, when you click on the link you need to be a member of the "fish-lore" site to see the photographs.

Hi all,
Stupid question, but why can I see it on here but nobody else can?
Are you a member of the fishlore site? if you are there is probably a cookie set that recognizes you as a member of both forums.

I'm really poor at ID and sexing, but the thumbnails look like male A. bitaeniata.

There are different forms, from different rivers, but your male and a female would still breed true together (the out-come would be A. bitaeniata, not a hybrid).

Have a look at @Tom C's <"web pages">, he called the fish he collected cf. bitaeniata, as he wasn't sure it is exactly the same as the holotype.

What is a holotype? Are the what i call sub-spices is not at all ? Are they all genetically identical except for color variations and distribution, and can all types crossbreed with each other?
Still learning, jumping into apistos with both feet.

The holotype is a single fish that is the type specimen from which the species was scientifically described. Have a look at <https://apistogramma.com/forum/thre...amma-made-by-roland-kipper.21701/#post-101239>.

A lot of Apistogramma "species" are not scientifically described, partially because they are part of an <"adaptive radiation"> and still undergoing speciation.

I'm not sure whether all forms of A bitaeniata are the same species or not.
