Hi yandy I noticed your From the uk, where abouts are you located? I'm also uk based in south east always looking for contacts in the great wide fish world but it's a giant struggle finding anyone in the uk and have no local clubs. Your apistogramma look lovely! Do you just keep for fun or do you breed?

Hi Apsnake
I'm in the Midlands Sheffield area, I agree the club scene has changed since I last kept fish there seem to be very few. I'm lucky to have a good lfs specialising in Apistogramma. I'm trying to keep it low key I have a show tank and a few smaller tanks I use for projects. Bitaeniata being the project of the moment. And you just for fun or do you breed

Ahh ok a fair way up the island then! I just can't seem to find anyone local who's got dwarf cichlids and fry etc I can get most sp. from my lfs but always like a new challenge or some specimen treats! I wish I could get my apistos to breed I have no luck with my tanks I have a harem of trifasciata who have spawned and eaten the fry several times! I have saved fry once but they died in my care so haven't attempted since and they still haven't cracked it! Plus my male has had a parasite! I have a pair of macmasteri in a breeder no luck with them either. I do have some awesome guppys that breed crazy they're Bristol 2010 guppys I'm told that's the competition they one but who knows. Unusual for guppys though very nice markings! Anyway that's me I just love apistos really I've tried and tested a few but was very inexperienced I now have learned a lot and find it easier. Still not that easy though lol! Any tips on breeding apistos? U keep pairs or harems? I could use all the help I can get if I want my apisto family

I have a formula I follow which works for me most of the time. but I have been trying for 6 months with a harem of D Filamentosa 3f 1m 4 spawns so far but no wrigglers yet
RO water
twice weekly30% water changes
live food my greenhouse has drums of water fleas and gnat larvae
space
patience
choosing good stock
I like harems but its down to space the latest spawn is a pair in a 10 gallon
I hope that helps
I would be careful if you decide to use RO water it would probably affect your guppys

I had a brief encounter with ro but my plants took a battering and at the time had algae problems anyway so just didn't work out well! I have plenty of space to be honest I live alone and acquired all of my tanks cheap so my trifasciata 1m/4f have a 200l with a few blue eyed killis (not big ones they're the size of a neon) and my pair of macmasteri have a divided 60l with a couple of hatchets the guppys share two tanks one is a 40long that I put 4 of my guppy spawn in to help cycle the tank and they now inhabit that too but the original is a 30l on my windowsill full of algae and plants and they spawn like mad! I have no guppys with apistos although the 40 will hopefully house a pair of borelli or if I can find a genuine pair njisseni! Borelli stand out because I know they are rather tolerant or have been in my care and I really want to turn my 200l into an apisto colony tank. Let the spawns grow out properly in there and enjoy the journey was the idea but every spawn has failed except one and I removed the fry and shortly after they died! All doom and gloom my end! On a brighter note my female trifasciata has blocked a cave up and I could swear she has spawned she hasn't left the cave for days except for food I dropped in front of the entrance or to scare off the other females! She comes out dances with the male and he seems to be guarding an outer perimeter which say spawn to me! It's only been a couple of days so fingers crossed I can get a spawn. I'm not sure to leave the fry with the mother or pull them as soon as I see them or soon after

I keep doing that lol
Sounds like it get that bbs bubbling
I like to watch the mother looking after the youngsters I would leave them maybe remove some of the other fish if things get out of hand.
my brood is about three weeks old with about thirty left but I'm away for a week tomorrow so I'm hoping my son takes good care of them.
Hopefully I will see pictures of your fry when I return in a week
