Where on earth did you find that? I'd highly consider contacting your nearest demonologist to banish that vile being to the hole it crawled out of.

rat-tailed maggot , larva of a hover fly. Perfectly harmless, just don't eat one.
Never knew about this bug but thanks for the warning! Makes for an interesting read. Not sure about being perfectly harmless tho...don't fancy those larvae swimming in my guts.

The drone fly is reported to have caused accidental myiasis, which occurs when fly larvae inhabit a living host by accident, usually because of the ingestion of contaminated food in humans (Lakshminarayana et al. 1975). This can transpire in four ways: intestinal or gastric, nasal, auricular, or anal, with intestinal or gastric being the most common (Rogers and Walker 1916, Herms 1969). The larvae are able to survive gastric fluids, possibly due to the fact that they are adapted to living in polluted habitats (Aguilera et al. 1999). Myiasis from E. tenaxbecomes apparent when the host notices the larvae in their bowel movements
