Hi all,
A member of the UKAPS forum lives in the DRC, and he recently visited a huge spring pool and took a series of under-water pictures, including some cichlids.

Wow ... Zanguli's pics and info are amazing. So the "cold" rivers in DRC are 24 C huh? ... absolutely bone-chilling!
Did he ever collect and compile the water chemistry info from various sites that he talked about doing in one of the earlier posts?
That link to his mother's bonobo sanctuary is worth checking out too: http://www.lolayabonobo.org

Darrel - could that Chara-like plant in post #51 possibly be a sedge or rush? Looks similar to Juncus repens in eastern USA.

I can ask him about the water chemistry, but I don't think he has values. Heiko (Bleher) has been out to visit him this summer, he may have recorded water parameters. I know the water in the river Congo is soft.

The carpeting plant in post 51 is definitely a Charophyte of some description, and probably a Chara sp.The whorl of "leaves" are diagnostic. Have a look here: <"Freshwater Algae, Chara">

Looking at the vegetation (with the Chara etc.), I think the up-welling water in the spring must be reasonably base rich (although the base might be magnesium, rather than calcium).

cheers Darrel
