Sorry for the bad quality, I'm not a good photographer, (and I have a bad camera ; )

So here is the deal, I have aquired a group of wildcaught gibbiceps, i am rather certain about the id, but however this little fellow stands out. First it has not shown any of the abdominal stripes, that is characteristic of gibbiceps. Second it has a a separate caudal spot, which i have not seen in any of the other specimen.
Can it be A.gibbiceps or is it some other species.

Hi there,

I wouldn't have said gibbiceps, I've never seen any of mine with the vertical barring in the caudal fin this one is showing.

The caudal fin seems over large in comparison to the body which makes me think a pertensis style fish.

a.d.wood is right on. Even before I read his post I was thinking pertense group. The large round tail with the wide dark strip were the traits I noticed right away.

Yes, they are. A. gibbiceps is found in the middle Rio Negro and middle to lower Rio Branco. A. pertensis is found in the lower to middle - and possibly upper - Rio Negro. A. cf. pertensis is found in the lower & probably middle Rio Negro, too, only in less acidic systems.
