Wondering if you ever had luck with your Blue Flames? Just put mine in a 20 long to breed and would love any pointers if you had success

This domestic strain is among the easiest to get to spawn, though not always successfully. The OP started this thread because it's unusual not to work.

If the conditions in your tank are fitting, it should work out. If you want, start a new thread as a breeding log, there we can discuss your setup and measures.

Thanks for your quick reply! 1st time setting out to breed fish in a designated tank; I’ve done quite a bit of research but not specifically on the Blue Flame morph; this pair seemed very fond of each other in their quarantine/grow out tank, so I thought I’d give it a try. I’ll see how things go over the next couple weeks and create a new thread if I need some help!

Unfortunately, no. The pair spawned several more times, and every time fungused eggs were expelled from the cave. They’re now over 2.5 years old and have stopped spawning altogether. I hope you have better luck breeding yours.

It's not a morph, it's a breed. These fish do not exist in the wild.

You got a growout and somebody who will take the fry from you once they are big enough?
Thank you for the correction! (The retailer I purchased them from called them a morph, but I did know they weren’t wild type :)
I have a 40 breeder vacant; is that large enough? Not sure about placement…I’d love to think I could sell a few but there’s a great LFS an hour away that is open to credit/trade if selling them doesn’t pan out. I’m open to suggestions!

That tank should definitely suffice. Take the trade option from the store and talk to them beforehand. Selling by yourself is a hustle and will definitely end you making no profit and pay extra. Check in with the store, and if you can get credit for hardware and fish food, trade for other fish often ends in the retailer pushing you to decide on the spot. Unless you have come with a certain fish in mind and have the mental flexibility to forgo on other fish and stick to drygoods you will always lose in such a moment.

Thank you so so much for your advice!…it seems she already has eggs in the hut!!! She’s been guarding it since late yesterday and the male is doing a pretty good job staying on the other side of the tank. She came out and did some tail whipping and slight aggression when he ventured over during feeding tonight…he seems cautious and took her cues to leave.
Would you recommend I remove him? Partition the tank with a middle divider? Wait and see how things play out?
Ph ~6.6
Kh almost undetectable
Gh 30ppm
TDS 294
(I’m not that confident in the Kh reading as I don’t buffer any of my tanks and haven’t had issues with Ph swings or crashes; used API test strip for the Kh and Gh)
I can slowly replace water with RO too if need be.

Maybe I should have started a new thread…very surprised she’s already guarding a hut after only a day in the new tank!

It's possible that she is just trying to entice him to join her to spawn and he doesn't get it yet. If that is the current level of aggression he can stay.

Partition the tank with a middle divider?
Sorry, nonsense.

That's unusual. Any other readings like nitrate or fertilizers? If the KH was below detection and GH at that very low number too, what else is there? I see soil in the tank. Is that enriched with fertilizers, by any chance?

Honestly, pretty much everyone here on the forum acknowledges pH crashes as a rare phenomenon which you don't see in properly maintained softwater tanks, but if any in neglected overstocked, overfed, no-plant community tanks. So forget about that.

You should be only useing pure RO with no additives anyway.

Maybe I should have started a new thread…
Yes please. At least out of respect for the OP.

I told you right away, give them time to settle in. Most people actually ask right before it happens, because their patience is stretching.
