It's a relatively new domestic strain. Actually, there are probably several different strains out there; some with paler bodies, some with more red on the body. One of the original populations used to produce it is A. cf. agassizii (BBCS) TapajÂós (Rotrücken/Red-back) - how's that for a name! This wild form is quite pale (including the tail). The only prominent color on it is the red pigment on the area below the dorsal fin. This fish was mixed with several different population of domestic red tail Agassiziis to bring out the red, especially on the fins. The red on the back has been expanded on some strains, too. Apparently some of the strains used were those with pale yellow bodies.
