WTS: Baensch/Mergus Cichlid Atlas, Vol. 1 - Like New

I'm planning to sell this book on Amazon but wanted to see if anyone here on the forums would like to buy it first. I'd rather sell it to the people here than a stranger on Amazon. It looks like it's worth about $130 when sold used online but I'd sell it here for $85 shipped via Paypal. I'm...

    1.60m South American biotope

Gertbl, I really like the look of your tank, especially the way it's mostly shaded from direct light. If you haven't already, can you share what plants you use? I like the "lily" plants which are going toward the surface? Are those Nymphaea? Looking great!

I agree! I really like the look of those leaves. What all do you have in there? I see Oak, I think but not sure what else... Lookin good!

    Hello from SoCal!

SD here too. Good showing from SD on Apistogramma.com. :) I'm a daily reader of the forum and I post occasionally. (mostly with dumb questions. :) ) I feel the same as you about dwarf cichlids. When I first saw them as Aquatic Warehouse (great local SD shop), I was hooked instantly and...

    Blue Rams at Petsmart

Great information Ted! That's exactly what I was curious about. I wish I had known about oddballfish a couple years ago when I tried rams twice and was heartbroken when they all died. I'm guessing the rams did not like the "liquid rock" tap water around here and my 50/50 tap/rodi blend...

    Blue Rams at Petsmart

I should clarify before I get pelted to death with stones. :) I was there to pick up some anti-fungus medication for some Cardinal Tetra I isolated because of white sores. :) I'm not advocating purchasing livestock from any large chain just more curious if anyone knew why such a large chain...

    Blue Rams at Petsmart

I stopped by Petsmart (US big chain pet store) yesterday and the fish guy told me "we have Blue Rams now." He had a male and two females he had just put on display a couple of hours before. He told me that Petsmart had stopped carrying Blue Rams like 6 years ago because there was too much...

    My BW/CW 50 gallon tank

Tom, I gotta say, this is one of my favorite tanks of all time. Reminds me so perfectly of South American underwater fish videos from Aquanet.tv or Freshwater Natural Aquariums. Can you post more details about your setup? Lighting, filtration, etc. I think I see Frogbit and Pennywort and...

75 Gal A. eunotus "orangeschwanz" Setup

Tank looks great! You've inspired me to dump the rest of my bag of Indian Almond leaves in my tank. I love that leaf pile look you've got going.

    Something's driving up my hardness

Thanks Mike and Darrel. That helps a lot to know that splitting the dGH and dKH isn't as critical as I once thought. Maybe it's coming from the plant tank world and CO2 injection where dKH is desirable for stable CO2 levels. I did buy a TDS/EC meter and found that my 55G, which was the one I...

Do you talk to your fishes?

I don't know about talking *TO* them but I've definitely annoyed my girlfriend to no end by describing in detail what they are doing in the tank. :)

    Something's driving up my hardness

Update: It's definitely gotta be the substrate. I checked the water sample again and it's way higher than the sand sample. Do you guys strongly prefer a TDS meter over solution based testing? It seems like you can't split dKH vs dGH with the TDS meters I was looking at but maybe the total is...

    Something's driving up my hardness

Update: I just tested all 3 water glasses and it looks for sure like the substrate/soil from the 55 has moved from 0ppm dGH to 25dGH while the other two have stayed at 0. The dKh hasn't moved noticably but the non 55 gallon test strips stayed at 0dKH while the 55 gallon sample got like 40/80...

    Something's driving up my hardness

I'll try the vinegar and see what happens and if I get nothing I might be braver with the acid. After all the replies and such I'm thinking it really must be the substrate (either the rocks or soil)... I put the sand from the 12g, the gravel and soil from the 55G and a bunch of snail shells...

    Something's driving up my hardness

Thanks for the replies! Regani: I'm not sure what the gravel is. It said "Rockman." The place I bought the gravel from knew I was interested in softwater fish and they are by far the best in the area (ie, always have apistos, discus, panduros etc). I would guess that they would not sell me...

    Blue Rams

I just stumbled across this thread and it actually helped me figure out what has been going on with a Rummy Nose Tetra I have. Same kind of thing. The fish was always way more "yellow" than all the others and then almost overnight he's very black. Just like the ram in the picture but the...

    Something's driving up my hardness

I've googled the heck out of this and called a couple of local fish stores and I cannot figure out what's driving my PH, KH and GH up. I figured I'd throw it out here to see if anyone has any ideas that might help. Over a year ago I switched to 100% RO/DI water since I had hardness of like...
