My area recently had multiple electrical blackouts due to bad weather. Thankfully, I own a battery powered air pump that I use to airate the tank when the power is out.
The bad news is that the power outage must have affected my heater becuase when the power came back on for good, the heater...
Greetings -
I have a trio of cacs in my planted 38 gal. It is a community tank with several red phantom tetras, several cardinal tetras and one bristlenose pleco.
One of my female cacs has produced several batches of fry in the past. None have ever survived past the tiny stage. I am...
I currently have a trio of cacs in my planted community tank. One of the females has had three separate batches of fry in the last few months. Even with her aggressive vigilant guarding and plenty of cover, none of the fry have made it. They last a week or so and then they are gone.
The...
The fry are taking cover in a big tangle of anubias, java fern and java moss. The filter intakes are about halfway up the tank (I do not keep them towards the bottom because they just clog up too fast with plant debris).
Sounds like a few of them may have a shot.
I have kept various apisto's in my planted 38 gal display tank for many years. There have been numerous occasions where females have laid eggs.
I currently have a trio of cac's in the tank along with tetras (cardinal and red phantom), an ancistrus pleco and a few oto cats.
I just...
Hello again -
I replaced my 18,000k bulb with a 10,000k bulb a couple of weeks ago. I kept the 6700k bulb in place. The tank lighting is a bit more "yellow" to the eye but still looks good. Maybe my school of cardinal tetras do not look quite as good as before but still look fine overall...
My tank is a 38 gal (36x12x20). Yes, I dose with Flourish Plant Supplement and Flourish Excel Carbon Supplement.
Sword Plants, Anubias, Java Fern, Java Moss, etc.
I have a 36 inch T5 HO setup over my freshwater planted tank. It allows two bulbs at 39W each. I currently have Hagen brand bulbs: one Life Glo (6700k) and one Power Glo (18000k).
My plants are healthy and doing fine but am wondering if a different combination of bulb types would allow...
I have used both the Kent product and the Seachem product for my planted tank.
I live on a private well and water is very high in iron and is not suitable for my tank. Therefore I use RO water and would never add my own tap back in for remineralization purposes.
The Seachem product claims...
I find all of this very interesting. Seems that most of my apisto's fall short of the average lifespan of other captive apisto's.
Some of my apisto's make it past 2 years but I would have to say this is not the majority.
Maybe one of my factors is 3 young boys in the house that I often...
Anytime I keep an individual apisto alive in my tank for 2+ years, I consider it to be a success. I do not think I have ever had one reach 3 years.
I would say the average apisto lifespan in my tank is 12-15 months. Do you other apisto keepers out there have similar average lifespans...

Mixing African and South American cichlids is not recommended. They generally require different water parameters and tend not to get along very well. They even "speak" different languages in terms of mood coloration (aggressive vs. submission).
I would tell you to pick one type...
Thanks to all that responded. I will start using Flourish excel carbon supplement on a daily basis and see if that makes a difference. I will also start adding some trace elements from flourish.
Thanks for responding. Hopefully I can answer your questions and give additional information.
My tank is 38 U.S. gallon
Tank currently has 4 apistos, about 15 cardinals, 1 ancistrus pleco, 3 oto cats
Substrate is typical aquarium pea gravel.
I was running a triple fluorescent t-8 canopy...
Hello -
I was wondering if somebody with more planted tank experience than me could answer a question.
I have a planted tank with several species of plants but primarily anubias and sword plants. Some of the leaves on these anubias and sword plants are turning a mottled / marbled black...
