I get a little terracotta pot, score the lip to size I want (I always put them in upside-down), use this wierd clipper tool to continue to eat away at the score marks, inevitably break the pot, chip some away from where I want the hole to be, superglue it back together, clean up the huge mess...
thanks for the links, they are going to be great in my planted 60 gallon! I've been to Mainly Cichlids a couple times and Jim is awesome! He has a great setup and it's great to have such a wonderful resource locally.
I thought I'd post this for those like me who aren't able to do a big order directly from Oliver, but Mainly Cichlids just got Oliver's new list in. I think he's putting in the order at the end of the week. Lots of apistos and other dwarf cichlids are on the list! I'm thinking of getting a...
david soares just talked to my local club (SVAS) on Saturday, January 6th. He mentioned that the vol. 1 is out of print due to a fire that destroyed the last 1000 copies stored in a warehouse. He said the printer will be printing more copies in the future. He did mention this species in the...
My pair of trifasciatas ('Red') spawned for the first time in early June. Between a power outage, high temperatures and first-time spawn in a community tank, I was very happy thinking that one of the fry had survived. Imagine my surprise seeing two of the fry swimming together last night! The...
I guess my apistos really like their new tank because last night I found all the fish hiding on one half of the tank - sure enough, mama trifasciata was herding around a flock of free-swimmers on the other half. :D These little guys are teeeensy! Barely visible to the naked eye!
Do I need...
i thought i had lost all the fry due to a power outage and a lot of really hot weather (no air conditioning in the house) but look what I found:
You can kinda see papa in the background keeping everyone away. Here's a better picture:
So far so good, there are still several fry that the female and male are protecting. They have driven everyone else to the other half of the tank. I have the foreground of the tank covered with Marseilia (sp?), they really seem to like the cover provided by the plant.
I have them in a heavily-planted 60 gallon community tank that is pretty understocked. So far, so good - they are keeping all of the other fish on the other side of the tank and I'm keeping the lights on 24/7. I know that having them in a community will really reduce the numbers of surviving...
Hooray! My A. trifasciatas I got several weeks ago have successfully bred! Tonight I noticed one of my females was extra snippy and when I looked closer, she was guarding a bunch of free-swimmers! From their behaviour of the last few days, I believe this was their first spawn. I think they...
If you ever get down to the San Jose area, Jim at Mainly Cichlids has a lot of different types of apistos. I got a harem of trifasciatas and I was really impressed with them. Of course with the gas prices being what they are, it might be cheaper to get them shipped! :)
I just wanted to give an update on my fish as well as thanks to everyone. As it turns out, the female was definitely a borelli and my male a trifasciata. I gave the female to Jim at www.mainlycichlids.com where she is busy making babies. :) Jim was able to get me a bunch of females and a...
I've had a pair of cacs in my 25 gallon with a pair of BN plecos and a school of cardinals with no problems. The other fish I have no idea, hopefully someone else will chime in.
ADA Aquasoil definitely is available in the US. Locally, I can get it in San Francisco at Aquaforest and I know others have gotten it at different stores. The cost of the Aquasoil at AF is ~$36 for a 9 liter bag. I'm going to get the Amazonia Aquasoil for a new 46 gal tank I'll be setting up...
The EASIEST way to raise KH (not GH) is simply to add 1/2 teaspoon of Baking Soda to the tank. You do want a KH higher than 2 because the CO2 will eat away at the buffer. KH of 3 or 4 is much safer. Check out Rex Grigg's Guide to Planted Tanks www.rexgrigg.com - there's a lot of awesome...
You may want to check out www.mainlycichlids.com, Jim's is a great breeder and dealer located in Santa Clara, CA. He's doing a group order from Oliver Lucanus on Feb 13th but he also does group orders from other wholesalers - the different fish lists are on their website.
Is it possible that there is one dominant male and other subdominant males are pretending to be female so they don't get harassed? I once had what I thought was a pair of cacs and when the male died, the "female" turned out to be a male.
I got some A. trifasciata's from apistodave awhile ago and was very happy with them. They were shipped really well. Definitely someone I would recommend.
well... shoot. I think you're right though, I found some more female pictures and it just doesn't match what I have. Luckily, I *might* have a source for some trifasciata females. Anybody need a female borelli?
Thanks everyone for your help!
