I really like the look of black sand as substrate but I don't see any german blue rams or kribs tanks with this substrate, can I keep them with black sand or do they need white sand/gravel?
I'm pretty much in the same boat as Jimi. Just got my 24Lx12Wx16H and have started to cycle with a betta before adding any other fish. I didn't put any gravel/sand in yet as I'm still deciding. I hope you don't mind some follow up questions from me...
What do the "alder cones" do Mark? Do...
I'm going to set up a 20 gallon dwarf cichlid tank and have filtration question.
Would you put 2 sponge filters for 10g in so that each territory has their own food supply for fry or would you still have a single one for 20g and move it depending on where the pair spawns? Or use a 20g and 10g...
What is more important for a grow-out the surface area or the length? If, for example, the fry consists of apistos, rams, kribs would a (WxLxH) 24x18x18 or 30x12x12 be better suited?
Would you guys/gals put all fry from different fish (e.g. kribs, rams, apistos) in a large grow-out together or would this be a pain later trying to sort them out? I'm definately dealing with lack of space so 3 different 30 gallon tanks are pretty much out of the question.
Thanks Darrel,
I'm probably getting 1M 2/3F or just a pair given it's hard to have 2M in a tank to get along.
Are cardinal or neon tetra always fry eaters regardless of their size and maturity?
Not to hijack the thread but what are the thoughts/articles on inbreeding with cacas? I've read on several occasions (besides Mike's post) that leaving the fry with the female might result in her spawning with a juvenile male of the fry. Will this result in colour changes or bad fry or something...
So with 5-6 cacas and 8 black neon tetras I can still leave the fry in the 20 gallon tank and hope that some will survive (given that they have enough spots to hide? Or should I be removing any additional male cacas that don't seem to pair up in the end? How old (large) should the cacas be when...
Thanks Darrel.
Wouldn't a single power filter be better than having 2 sponge filters. I'm just worried the tank is going to look cluttered. I just chose the sponge originally because it increases the oxygen in the water (because of the bubbling I thought). I might go with an AquaClear 20 or...
I think I'm going with a 20 gallon setup with moss covered bogwood, a bunch of caves (coconuts or terracotta pots/trays), some other plants like java fern or pygmy chain sword, and some open space with flat stones in case I want any rams if there is only one pair of cacas that decides to like...
I like the look of the cardinal tetras so I guess I'll try to find some smaller ones during the setup of the tank. I guess guppies would be nice too since they have some colour.
Would 2F1M caca, 6 cardinals, and 1-2 otos work in 20 gallon? Or would I be better off starting with 6 cacatuoides...
Thanks Darrel and Ted. After reading more I guess I shouldn't go with the tetras and corys since the tetras eat the fry and the corys take up the same space in the tank. I guess I'll go with a pure caca breeding tank set up.
Hi all,
I've just signed up and I though I would introduce myself before reading all there is on this forum.
I'm living in Vancouver, Canada but am originally from the Netherlands. I currently only have 2 bettas but have been around aquariums all my life since my dad's aquariums had pretty...
