Dr. Anton Lamboj's Book Now Available

I received my copy from Randall a couple weeks ago and I am reading through it as I have time. It is a highly informative book with great pictures and was worth every penny! Much thanks to Dr. Lamboj for producing this fine book and to Randall for making it available to us!

    Western African Cichlid Availability Update

It must have been from Lake Wilson which is actually a resevoir on the island of Oahu. There are other species introduced in that "lake", but I don't know if there are any westies, though there are a couple CA and SA cichlids, and maybe some Rift Lake species. I know of a stream that my brother...

    Western African Cichlid Availability Update

Hi Ted, Yes, I did contact Toyin about some H. frempongi, and did still have some available. The bad thing is I sent in my import permit application and then realized that H. frempongi is not listed on the Hawaii State Dept. of Ag's list of conditionally approved animals, so I may need to...

    Western African Cichlid Availability Update

Hi Randal, Would you know if any Hemichromis frempongi will be imported, or if they are already available somewhere? Thanks!

Hi Randall, Did you ever get any Hemichromis frempongi imported? If so, any breeding success?

Rummynose Tetra as dithers for apisto tank?

Hi Si, Rummynose tetras are great dithers. I have 10 of them in my planted 55g with apistos and cories. Now all I need are some otos (hard to find around here). Pencilfish should do great also, I am planning on getting some.

    Coconut shells

Hi Michael, If you want you could experiment with different entrance hole sizes, but in my experience (which is not very extensive by the way  ) fish tend to choose caves or crevices that they can just fit into. I believe this is so nothing bigger than them can get in to "their" cave.

    Apistogramma Albertini

Hi there! In the post below Rolo mentions that Apistogramma sp. "Albertini" could be another name for Ap. eunotus "Schwanzstreifen" http://www.apistogramma.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1385 I would do a google search on Apistogramma sp. "Albertini" and see what else you could come up with.

    Astatotilapia latifasciata?

Thanks Randall, I have very little knowledge of Victorian cichlids, but it has increased some thanks to you! I am more interested in learning about the cichlids from West Africa, which is your area of expertise, but I was curious about the Victorian cichlids because of their fate. Thanks...

    Astatotilapia latifasciata?

Thanks for the info Randall! I saw some for sale so I was doing a little research before deciding if I should to expand into Victorian cichlids. I also read that the "real" 'Haplochromis' obliquidens is now extinct. Is that true? Also, what are/were the differences between the "Zebra...

    my borellii juvies are spawning!?

Congrats on the successful spawn! I am also planning on getting a RO system soon. I want to be able to reduce the kH of my tapwater so I can lower the pH easier with natural methods if possible. Oh, by the way the pH of the tank I had one pair of viejitas in to breed was around 7 and they...

South American Cichlid Buffer 4.5+ vs. Acid Buffer

According to my Aquarium Pharmaceuticals test kit, the kH of my tap water is about 5-6. The pH might be going back up quickly because of CO2 being released from the water. I am not totally sure about the South American Cichlid Buffer 4.5+, but the Acid Buffer states that it converts...

    my borellii juvies are spawning!?

Good luck with your three borellii spawns! I had two pairs of viejitas in a 55g community tank with 8 rummynose tetras, 2pr Blue Rams, 3 pairs of cory species, 1 pictus cat, 2 juv syno eupterus, and 3 female cacs. I put the dominant male and the larger female in their own 20H tank and a month...

South American Cichlid Buffer 4.5+ vs. Acid Buffer

Both products are manufactured by Seachem and were purchased from PetSolutions.com Two buckets, each containing approximately 3 gallons of aged tapwater. Bucket 1: pH of 8.3 and TDS of 72ppm Bucket 2: pH of 8.3 and TDS of 74ppm Treated bucket 1 with 20mL of South American Cichlid...

    peat and activated charcoal

I double-checked what I wrote down for the first test (after couple hours of filtration) and the pH was at 9.7! The pH dropped to 8.9 and the TDS increased to 86ppm after more than 24 hours of carbon filtration. It looked as if it has cleared up the water a little, but it is hardly noticeable.

    breeding tank sze>??

Wow Ted! I guess I was thinking on a small scale. Hopefully I will be able to have something like what you described in the near future!

    breeding tank sze>??

As morten said, height is not very important. I would go with the size that provides the most area. Most dwarf cichlids would be comfortable breeding in a 20L. That is the size I would probably go for when creating a multi-tank breeding setup.

    peat and activated charcoal

Results of carbo on peat water I filtered a 3 gallon bucket of peat-treated water (pH 6.5, TDS 35ppm) with a Dynaflo 2 filter containing only an Aquaclear 300 filter media bag full of activated carbon. After a couple hours the water looked the same color, but the TDS increased to 69ppm and the...
